Social Networking Websites Linked to Teenage Substance Abuse

Columbia University’s Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse (CASA) recently published a study that showed a positive correlation between drug use and the heavy use of social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter.

In their study, 70% of children aged 12 to 17 who reported to have participated in some type of risky behavior such as using alcohol and/or drugs, also reported using social networking websites such as Facebook and MySpace on a regular basis. Furthermore, according to CASA, teens who reported using social media were five times likelier to use tobacco, three times likelier to drink alcohol and twice as likely to try marijuana.

While the use of networking websites doesn’t necessarily indicate a cause and effect relationship between the two, it is crucial that parents monitor their child’s computer activity and openly discuss the consequences of drugs, alcohol, tobacco and other substances or activities teens may feel tempted to engage in due to peer pressure and exposure.

Negative Impact of Drug-related Phone Apps

A recently developed drug-related phone app has come to the attention of parents and counselors.

The app which is known as “Roll a Joint”, allows users to create their very own virtual cigarettes; practically erasing the stigma attached to smoking marijuana and other illegal substances while encouraging them to go into the real world and perhaps roll a few joints themselves.

The company that developed the app is known as “Full Duplex Packet”, or FDP Games., and it isn’t the only drug-related game they have created. Their 2 other apps “Smoke a bowl” and “Nose candy” all allude to drugs and can easily be purchased online or even downloaded.

Dr. Hughes, Clinical Director of Inspirations Teen Rehab says that “Anything that would encourage people to use drugs at a younger age, or to start using a drug is concerning.” Also he believes that games with drug-related content promote drug use among the nation’s teens who are already being tempted by the media and their peers to experience different illegal drugs which could have dangerous repercussions.

Idaho Teen Addiction Treatment Programs

Inspirations for Youth and Families aka Inspirations Teen Rehab, is a nationally recognized, licensed residential addiction treatment center, for teens ages 14 to 18 and their families, who are struggling with the chaos of
teen behaviors and the consequences associated with alcohol and/or drug addiction, which may include mental health issues, more commonly known as dual-diagnosis. At Inspirations Teen Rehab we understand your concern for your teenager and the changing behaviors causing heartbreak and fear for your teen’s safety and future.

Inspirations’ teen addiction treatment programs focuses on all aspects of teen behavioral issues. Family is the cornerstone of Inspirations’ teen addiction treatment center. Teens attending Inspirations’ are using or abusing drugs, often beginning with marijuana. Often, marijuana is the only drug or substance used by a teen. However, drug use becomes drug abuse and eventually leads to drug addiction. Marijuana historically leads to other drugs. Drugs combined with behaviors that demonstrate disrespect for parents, home rules, boundaries, and lack of accountability for actions, are typically an explosive combination that leads to significant and sometimes irreversible consequences.

Interventions
are necessary for individuals who are unable or unwilling to recognize the need for help. Interventionists assist families in confronting and guiding their loved one to recognize the signs and symptoms of addiction and the need for change. Credentialed and experienced Interventionists are available to assist individuals and family members.

Teen Drug Detox in Idaho / Teen Drug Detoxification in Idaho
Normally, those suffering from a drug addiction cannot safely detox on their own. In fact, in some cases, attempting to do so can be deadly. During the drug detoxification process, the body is denied the toxins usually accumulated by the drug, resulting in uncomfortable and in some cases dangerous drug withdrawal symptoms. Sometimes a drug with a similar action is taken instead, to reduce the side effects and risks of withdrawal. Detoxification is often the first step in a drug addiction treatment program and should be followed by addiction treatment therapies. Behavioral-based therapy and/or a medication (if necessary) are available during Drug Detoxification in Idaho. Detox alone with no follow-up is not an addiction treatment.

There are a number of Idaho drug detox programs available. Studies have shown that inpatient drug detox programs are usually more successful than outpatient detox, due in large part to the fact that they are medically based programs located within a drug rehab facility or addiction treatment center.

Overdoses in Arriba County, NM Highest in State

The state Health Department released statistics in February that paint a grave picture of the state of health in Rio Arriba County, New Mexico, on various fronts.

Rio Arriba’s death rates due to drug overdoses and alcohol abuse, were among the highest in the state. Department data shows that from 2007 through 2009, the period during which the statistics were compiled, 133 people in the County died from alcohol abuse, 65 from drug overdoses.

The County’s health status is more stark when compared with statistics from neighboring counties such as Los Alamos, Santa Fe and Sandoval, which display positive results in many health statistics. The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, a philanthropic organization devoted to public health, compiled various statistics on each county in New Mexico and released them in 2010, ranking Los Alamos, Santa Fe and Sandoval Counties first, second and third, respectively, for overall county health.

Rio Arriba County ranked 32nd out of 32 counties, as Harding County was not ranked.

On average, local youth begin using marijuana at ten years of age and then within four to six months they move on to other illegal substances. Children as young as 12 are brought in to the emergency room in New Mexico for treatment for illicit drug overdoses.

The prices for illegal substances are very affordable, and sales are accessible. For example, heavily-cut doses of cocaine cost little more than five bucks, but the poor product quality results in short highs and intensified desires for more and more dosages.

One nurse in New Mexico said the majority of teens report the following pattern of drug abuse: marijuana, cocaine, ecstasy, crack and methamphetamine, in that order, were the most popular drugs reported by teens that ended up at the emergency room.

If you are a parent, loved one or a teen seeking the help of teen addiction treatment centers, Inspirations Rehab recommends programs where teens can immerse themselves in a whole new way of life, where accountability, life skills and recreational activities are part of the teens daily routine. Inspirations Teen Rehab responds to Teen Drug Abuse by making sure that in addition to their premier drug abuse program, each teen can maintain (or improve) their academic performance.

Inspirations designed a teen drug and alcohol addiction treatment center and treatment programs that provide addiction prevention, as well as treatment and aftercare services. For those teens that have moved beyond drug abuse, Inspirations Teen Drug Rehab provides recovery that meets teenagers at their place in life.

Multidimensional Family Therapy for Adolescent Drug Abuse

The pandemic of drug abuse amongst teens is ever growing. Families with drug abusing teens tend to seek therapy as effort to save their child, with little focus on the actual relationship. Multidimensional Family Therapy, or MDFT, is a therapy that engages substance abusing teens and their parents individually while building the relationship between them. According to two National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) randomized trials, this type of therapy has proven to have lasting benefits that extend beyond reduced drug use.

Teenage participants treated with MDFT were studied one year after treatment and were found to have fewer drug – related problems. Their behavior and mental health had also improved more compared to teens treated with CBT. Both teens and parents have separate sessions so the therapeutic process is effective for everyone. In sessions with students, the aim to establish meaningful therapeutic goals, foster motivation, and help the adolescents develop concrete strategies to solve problems and find alternatives to drug taking and delinquency. In their own sessions, parents learn about family management, parent – adolescent relationship, as well as parenting skills. "MDFT is a flexible and individualized treatment system rather than a one-size-fits-all approach," says Dr. Liddle. MDFT has been used for young (11 to 15 years old) and older adolescents and juvenile offenders. It has been applied in clients' homes, community-based clinics, residential treatment centers, and correctional facilities. In a statement to the National Institute of Drug Abuse, Dr. Howard Liddle of the University of Miami, who led the two studies said, “We connect with parents in a way that recognizes their stress and the anger, hopelessness, and even despair they may feel about their child. Then we help parents reconnect emotionally to their child. This renewed caring is instrumental in changing parenting practices.”

Advantages
MDFT and CBT are similar in results. They both aim to provide patients with skill not only to reduce the drug use. But unlike MDFT, CBT focuses on individuals rather than family development. Parents attend the first two sessions. The help their child assess the issues at hand and set goals for recovery. According to NIDA, the conclusion of these trials proved that CBT and MDFT have similar results. In the CBT group, youths dropped cannabis use to 7.5 days from 10 days and MDFT dropped to 7.5 days from 12 days. However in the months ahead, those in the MDFT group fared better. MDFT benefits younger teens as well. The results for MDFT in younger teens showed that participants were more likely to stay in treatment – 97 % in the NDFT group finished counseling as opposed to the 72 % of the CBT group. Dr. Lisa Onken, chief of the Behavioral and Integrative Branch of NIDA's Division of Neuroscience and Behavioral Research says, "This is a very complex treatment, and the more we can figure out the essential ingredients—what is critically important and what is of lesser importance—the better we will be able to implement it in the community."

If you or someone you know is struggling with substance abuse or addiction and is in need of help, Inspirations Teen Rehab offers a flexible and affordable teen addiction treatment program. Our aim is to treat the whole person, and not just an isolated symptom. During the addiction treatment process we will work with the teen to identify the factors that may have contributed to the prescription drug abuse and addiction – home, friends and medical history. We also believe that families have a vital role to play in the recovery process, and each addiction treatment program has a place for family participation, Multidimensional Family Therapy, or MDFT to educate them in the treatment process and to equip them for their role as parents and supporters.

Kids Do Not Perceive Drugs as Dangerous or Addictive

Kids who begin to use drugs think they will not become addicted. But addiction is a disease characterized by a compulsive drug-seeking behavior regardless of the consequences. Research conducted by the National Institute on Drug Abuse clearly shows that virtually all drugs that are abused have a profound effect on the child’s brain. Prolonged use of many drugs including cocaine, heroin, marijuana and amphetamines can change the brain in fundamental and long-lasting ways, resulting in drug craving and addiction.

If and when a child drug abuser becomes addicted depends on the individual. Research shows that children who use alcohol and tobacco are more likely to use marijuana than children who do not use these substances. Children who use marijuana are more likely to use other addictive drugs. Certain genetic, social, and environmental risk factors make it more likely that certain individuals will become addicted to alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs. These include:

• children of alcoholics who, according to several studies, may have inherited genes that make them more prone to addiction, and who may have had more stressful upbringings;
• sensation-seekers who may like the novelty of feeling drunk or high;
• children with psychological problems, such as conduct disorders, who self-medicate to feel better;
• children with learning disabilities, and others who find it difficult to fit in or become frustrated learning;

• children of poverty who lack access to opportunities to succeed and to resources when they're in trouble.

The more risk factors children have, the greater their vulnerability.

Regardless of how "cool" drugs may look, there is nothing glamorous about the reality of addiction, a miserable experience for the addict and everyone around him. Addiction causes an all-consuming craving for drugs, leading a caring person to destroy relationships, work, and family life and many times getting caught up with the criminal system.

If you suspect your child is using illegal drugs, abusing alcohol or prescription drugs, seek professional help and remember these three C's: that 'you didn't Cause, can't Control and can't Cure' your child's problems. But you can and must take charge if you find your child involved with drugs and alcohol. The earlier you act upon your child’s addiction problems the better will be the outcome for your child.

Don’t let your child become a statistic. Reach out to us.

The Challanges Teens Face When Going Back to School

Is it safe for our teens to return to school? It's becoming harder to keep our teens away from drugs during the middle and high schools years. Some of the interesting challenges teens face when returning to school is making choices about who to be friends with and facing peer pressure in an environment where drug use is only increasing. If you are a concerned parent wondering what you can do to intervene, there are some ways you can help your child. There are pamphlets, books, dvds, and drug education booklets available online as well as websites with plenty of information. Talking with your teen and making sure that they are aware of the effects and consequences associated with drug use and abuse can help them make informed decisions when approached by their peers. When they are educated on what drugs are, what they look like, and what they can do to a person, they are less likely to be conned into taking drugs. Independent studies show that teens and children who have received education from parents, books and pamphlets report a significant decrease in drug use or in the potential to use drugs.

For those parents that are already struggling with a teen who has experimented with drugs or who is addicted, there is help available. Rehabilitation/drug addiction treatment is proven to be successful in helping teens with drug abuse problems. The most important part is acting before the problem gets worse and selecting the right addiction treatment facility for your teen. Parents need to make the right choice for their children, especially when they see that their teens are making the wrong choices and turning to drugs. It is tough and intimidating to confront your teen about their drug problem, but the dangerous effects of drugs are far worse than those personal fears. Keep in touch with your teen.

Drugs in general are highly addictive and addiction is a medical condition. A user is trying to achieve the same high that they felt on their first use. However, a user can never get the same high. It only takes one use of a drug to become addicted. It only takes one use to overdose or die. Like all medical conditions, treatment is necessary.

If you or someone you know is struggling with drug abuse or addiction and is in need of help, Inspirations Teen Drug Rehab offers a flexible and affordable teen addiction treatment program. Our aim is to treat the whole person, and not just an isolated symptom. During the treatment process we will work with the teen to identify the factors that may have contributed to you drug abuse – home, friends and medical history. We also believe that families have a vital role to play in the recovery process, and each addiction treatment program has a place for family participation, to educate them in the treatment process and to equip them for their role as supporters.
