When your Teenager is Lying about Drugs

While being lied to by a rebellious teen may be enough to make parents  feel  angry, hurt or betrayed, it is crucial that parents focus on the underlying reasons why their teen is lying because quite often,  teens successfully attempt to hide their drug abuse from their parents by lying.

Chief of psychiatry at Kaiser Permanente in San Francisco, Dr. Mason Turner, says “Most teens don’t think about what comes next, and concerns about the future don’t enter into their decision making.”

Parents concerned about their teens devious habits regarding drugs should consider the following tips:

1-Trust your instincts
So often when parents witness “red flags” and other signs that indicate their teen headed towards trouble, they ignore their intuition. Some parents even go as far as blaming themselves for having obsessive thoughts and/or being too sensitive or paranoid. But the bottom line is, if parents go with their gut feeling, their bound to be right most of the time.

2- Keeping up with drug trends
Many parents suspect their teen is using drugs and is up to no good, but they rule out the possibility of them using drugs because they are unable to see common side effects such as blood shot eyes, slurred speech, etc. With over hundreds of drug variations in today’s market, teens are bound to use some type of drug that doesn’t carry the same side effects, thus fooling parents into believing they are “clean” and that their parents are paranoid. It is crucial for parents to do extensive research on common drugs circulating in their communities as well as informing themselves on different types of drugs and their side effects.

3-Not being afraid to seek outside help
Having a teenage that uses drugs and/or is addicted may be stigmatizing and humiliating to some families to the extent to which they refuse to let anybody outside the immediate family become aware of the problem. These families often find themselves emotionally and physically exhausted when it comes to their child, but refuse to seek outside help regardless. Parents need to remember that just like they would take their ill child to a physician if they were to become ill, they need to seek the help of a certified interventionist, counselor or therapist who has been adequately trained to deal with delicate situations such as teenage drug abuse. By seeking professional help, families will expedite their child’s recovery and share their burden with individuals who know exactly what it takes to deal with teenage drug issues.

Accepting that your Child can Engage in Substance Abuse, Can Help Prevent it to Start With

Recent polls have shown that most parents under estimate the likelihood that their child would consume alcohol or use drugs. Furthermore, the polls revealed that only about 10% of parents believed their teen had used alcohol within the past year, which leads researchers to believe that most familiesdon’t have open communication with their teens or have extreme difficulty envisioning their child as one of the delinquents they often see on TV.

Whether they chose to believe it or not, 50% of tenth graders reported using alcohol and marijuana in the past year and only a third of parents believed the percentage was 60% or higher, suggesting that most parents don’t believe young teens are engaging in such behaviors.

Dr. Bernard Biermann of the University of Michigan's C.S. Mott Children's Hospital believes that parents should never assume their teens are not enticed by illegal drugs and substances, and that it is crucial that they remain vigilant and openly communicate with their children about even the most sensitive topics. Biermann also believes that if parents foster the “not my child” belief system, they will lose the chance to be actively involved in their child’s life and might unintentionally turn a blind eye tothe potentially harmful circumstances their teens may end up facing.

Saint Louis County’s Heroin Addiction

According to St. Louis County’s police department located in the state of Missouri, heroin overdose claimed the lives of 49 individuals in the past year.

St. Louis County police Chief Tim Fitch believes the problem has reached epidemic proportions with almost every race and social class succumbing to heroin, the popular and cheap alternative to other illegal substances with widespread availability.

The campaign “Curiosity + Heroin: Not Even Once”, a joint effort of the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse, St. Louis County’s Children's Service Fund and the St. Louis County Police Department have all been working closely together to educate the public on the detrimental side effects of using heroin. Furthermore, they have been identifying and arresting individuals who supply the drug in schools and neighborhoods across the county

The campaign has vowed to battle long and hard with heroin’s low costs, widespread availability and decreasing social stigma, in hopes of eliminating the heartbreaking causalities of heroin overdose within the next few years.

Addiction Identified as a Chronic Brain Disease

A recent statement released by the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) on August 15, 2011, has shocked millions of Americans throughout the country. After two decades of successful advancements in neurology the ASAM has concluded that after years of extensive research, they believe addiction is “not solely related to problematic substance abuse” but more so a chronic disease that compels individuals to form addictive, detrimental habits.

Former president of ASAM, Dr. Michael Miller believes that “addiction isn't just a social problem or a moral problem or a criminal problem, but a brain problem whose behaviors manifest in all these other areas".

Dr. Miller believes “we have to stop moralizing, blaming, controlling or smirking at the person with the disease of addiction, and start creating opportunities for individuals and families to get help and providing assistance in choosing proper treatment”.

It is estimated that with addiction now being treated as a “chronic disease”, advanced addiction rehabilitation methods will be able to better assist those battling addiction by identifying and understanding their addictions on both a physical and mental scale, and while doing so, offer them the help they need in order to overcome their addiction, regain their self-esteem and function normally in society.

Seven Ways Parents Can Reduce Troubled Teen Behaviors and at Risk Potential

It is prudent for all parents to recognized risk factors for teens, focusing on “troubled teens”, as the most at risk group of high school teenagers. Teens are a population of people, most at risk for drug use, abuse, and addiction. For troubled teens, the risk that teens will smoke, drink, get drunk and use illegal drugs increases sharply if they are highly stressed, frequently bored or have substantial amounts of spending money.

Below are seven ways parents/guardians can reduce troubled teen behaviors and at risk potential

• Identify mental health issues including attention deficit disorder, depression, oppositional defiance disorder, bipolar, PTSD, and other conditions commonly found in the teenage population.

• Understand when and why your children are bored, upset or triggered to engage in negative behaviors. Engage them in activities, suited for their personality and ability.

• Limit the amount of money your children have to spend and monitor how that money is spent.

• Know who your children's friends are and keep their friend’s and parent’s telephone numbers available for your use.

• Create a rewards-based chore and responsibility schedule. Reward good behavior and goal-oriented chores, tasks, and academics.

• Participate in your children's lives: attend their sports events, musical or theatrical accomplishments, oversee their homework and remain knowledgeable about their grades and academic performance, participate in activities together, and talk with them about drugs.
• Identify the stress in your child's life and help them, offering individual therapy or boarding school, adolescent residential rehab, and alternative solutions.

Top 5 Reasons Teens Resource to Drugs

Teens are a population of people, most at risk for drug use, abuse, and addiction. For troubled teens, the risk that teens will smoke, drink, get drunk and use illegal drugs increase sharply if they are highly stressed, frequently bored or have substantial amounts of spending money. According to The National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse (CASA), below are the top five reasons teens resource to drugs:

1. To combat loneliness, low self-esteem, anxiety, or depression

2. To mentally ‘check-out’ of family issues or school troubles

3. To ease discomfort in an unfamiliar situation

4. To look cool or change their image/reputation

5. To fit in with a desired group of friend

Suspicious Your Child Might be Using Drugs?

Since mood swings and unpredictable behavior are frequent occurrences for preteens and teenagers, parents may find it difficult to spot signs of alcohol and drug abuse. But if observe one or more of these signs drug abuse may be at the heart of the problem: reduction in academic grades or attendance, poor attitude when not related to chores or basic requests, avoidance of family members coupled with isolation and withdrawal, sleep changes, eyes are red-rimmed and/or her nose is runny in the absence of a cold, mood swings, change in peer group, change in hygiene and health, missing money, missing items such as IPOD’s MP3 players, electronics and computer games as they are sold or traded for substances.

The presence of pipes, rolling papers, small medicine bottles, eye drops, or butane lighters in your home signal that your child may be using drugs. Other clues include homemade pipes and bongs (pipes that use water as a filter) made from soda cans or plastic beverage containers. If any of these indicators show up, parents should start discussing what steps to take so they can present a united front.

If you suspect that your child is using illegal drugs, alcohol or prescription drugs you should talk to him/her about your suspicions avoiding direct accusations. This talk should take place when he/she is sober or straight, and you’re calm. This will show your child that you still love him/her, but you are most concerned with what he/she is doing to him/herself.

Taking time to discuss the problem without turning away from it is an important first step to take care of the problem. Most important, act fast, seeking counseling from a certified mental health professional with experience in youth and substance abuse is critical. Depending on your teen’s behavior and level of addiction your child will have a greater chance of recovery by attending a residential adolescent addiction treatment. Try to choose a treatment program that also offers an educational program so that your child will not miss out on school credits.

Even in the face of mounting evidence, parents often have a hard time acknowledging that their child has an alcohol, illicit drug or prescription drug abuse problem. Anger, resentment, guilt, and a sense of failure are all common reactions, but it is important to avoid self-blame. Drug abuse occurs in families of all economic and social backgrounds, in happy and unhappy homes alike. Most important is that the faster you act, the sooner your child can start the better is the outcome.

We must remember that every teen is a child with a dream. Teen drug abuse and teen addiction can steal a parent and child’s dreams for their future. Don’t let your child become a statistic. Reach out to us.

Teen Marijuana Abuse, Addiction and Treatment

Teens use Marijuana in many ways. The most common method is smoking loose marijuana rolled into a cigarette called a “joint” or “nail.” Sometimes marijuana is smoked through a water pipe called a “bong.” Others smoke “blunts”—cigars hollowed out and filled with the drug. And some users brew it as tea or mix it with food.

Some people mistakenly believe that “everybody's doing it” and use that as an excuse to start using marijuana themselves. Well, they need to check the facts, because that’s just not true. According to a 2009 survey called Monitoring the Future, about 7 percent of 8th-graders, 16 percent of 10th-graders, and 21 percent of 12th-graders had used marijuana in the month before the survey. In fact, marijuana use declined from the late 1990s through 2007, with a decrease in past-year use of more than 20 percent in all three grades combined from 2000 to 2007. Unfortunately, this trend appears to be slowing, and marijuana use remains at unacceptably high levels, as the most commonly used illegal drug.

When people smoke marijuana for years they can suffer some pretty negative consequences. For example, because marijuana affects brain function, your ability to do complex tasks could be compromised, as well as your pursuit of academic, athletic, or other life goals that require you to be 100 percent focused and alert. In fact, long-term users self-report less life satisfaction, poorer education, and job achievement, and more interpersonal and mental health problems compared to non-users.

Many people don’t think of marijuana as addictive—they are wrong. In 2007, the majority of youth (age 17 or younger) entering drug abuse treatment reported marijuana as their primary drug abused. Marijuana increases dopamine, which creates the good feelings or “high” associated with its use. A user may feel the urge to smoke marijuana again, and again, and again to re-create that experience. Repeated use could lead to addiction—a disease where people continue to do something, even when they are aware of the severe negative consequences at the personal, social, academic, and professional levels.

If you are a friend or family member of a teen struggling with marijuana abuse and or addiction, call now for help.It is never too late to prevent and/or stop an addiction. You as a parent of a family member can prevent a tragic outcome. Don't let your child become a statistic.

Adolescent Drug Rehab

Inspirations for Youth and Families aka Inspirations Teen Rehab, is a licensed residential substance abuse treatment for teens offering a powerful combination of programs: Teen Intensive individual addiction treatment program, family and group therapeutic sessions, educational program for teens in recovery, teen life skills management, and recreational/sports program. Inspirations' teen drug rehab programs combine motivational treatment with the "accountability" concept, emphasizing, respect for family, respect for others, and a teamwork approach towards daily goals and accomplishments.

Behavior modification is a very important part of our teen's addiction treatment program. During enrollment at our Teen Addiction Treatment Center, one of our licensed psychiatrist meets with the parents and collects information about their teen's behavior and past activities. Other family members and sometimes even teachers are welcome to complement the observations through a questionnaire or letter. The information/observations gathered will bring a better understanding of your child to us. Understanding your teen and his/her daily activities and surroundings will help us understand the behavior he/she is displaying. Additionally, understanding your child's daily life will help us with the greater goal of understanding the cause and effect of the behaviors, thus helping to affect change towards a clean and sober life.

Are Trouble Teens the Product of Bad Parenting

In our private and secure teen rehab center in Florida, Inspirations Youth and Family aka Inspirations Teen Rehab, the day to day activities are centered around therapy and fun activities.

Addiction Treatment Therapies such as the Individual Therapy and the Group Therapy is combined with sport activities like going to the gym or a game of basketball and swimming, weather permitting. All these group activities are designed to keep our teens busy, safe and always in learning mode. We always keep the parents of the teens attending our drug rehab facility informed about their child.

So it is not unusual to have parents of the addicted or troubled teen calling in and requesting to talk to one of the therapists regarding the improvements of the troubled boy or girl since he or she has been admitted in our teen drug rehab facility.

Almost always the concern of the parent of a teenager is that if their teen's addiction or their teen's troubled behavior is the result of their bad parenting. After all they have been told the children are the product of the society and the environment and given enough love and care they all will grow up to be normal, successful adults.

Sometimes it seems as if the parents of the troubled teens themselves can use a dose of therapy to get reassured that it is not them that caused the plight of their children.

The fact of the matter is that there are circumstances that contribute to the teen delinquency and teen drug and alcohol addictions. Absent parents, abusive parents or simply over indulging parents can have at-least contributed to the cause of their teenage troubled behavior or their teenage drug and alcohol addiction. But does it mean that the parents of every trouble teen or every teenager with drug or alcohol abuse problem is a bad parent?

Teen psychiatrists and psychologists have concluded that the era of "bad teenage behaviors are the result of bad parenting" is gone.

In an article in New York Times, Dr. Richard A. Friedman, professor of psychiatry at Weill Cornell Medical College in Manhattan wrote that even the best environment does not mold the everyday character traits of our teenage girl or boy. All human behaviors have hard-wired and genetic components.

Therapists and rehab consultants in drug rehab facilities, when talking to good, yet self blaming parents of the troubled teens in the teen rehab center try to re-assure these parents that it is perfectly normal to be a loving parent with good parenting skills and yet have a teenager suffering from teen drug addiction or teen alcohol addiction.

Our drug rehab center, Inspirations Teen Rehab, through the methodic work of our certified drug rehab therapists, we address the underlying causes of teen troubled behaviors and teen drug or alcohol addiction. We explore the relationship and responsibilities of the parents of the teens in our facility to the teens and the relationship and responsibilities of the teens to their parents.

We make sure that part of the teen’s learning is to understand that they are responsible for their own lives and for the parents to know that the time has come to stop blaming themselves and accept the fact that their teens made bad decisions and their teens have to accept the responsibility for it.

If you are a parent of a trouble teen and would like to get more information on our teen addiction treatment programs and teen behavior modification programs, please contact one of our teen addiction treatment professionals at: 1-888-757-6237 or visit our website at InspirationsYouth.com
