Seven Ways Parents Can Reduce Troubled Teen Behaviors and at Risk Potential

It is prudent for all parents to recognized risk factors for teens, focusing on “troubled teens”, as the most at risk group of high school teenagers. Teens are a population of people, most at risk for drug use, abuse, and addiction. For troubled teens, the risk that teens will smoke, drink, get drunk and use illegal drugs increases sharply if they are highly stressed, frequently bored or have substantial amounts of spending money.

Below are seven ways parents/guardians can reduce troubled teen behaviors and at risk potential

• Identify mental health issues including attention deficit disorder, depression, oppositional defiance disorder, bipolar, PTSD, and other conditions commonly found in the teenage population.

• Understand when and why your children are bored, upset or triggered to engage in negative behaviors. Engage them in activities, suited for their personality and ability.

• Limit the amount of money your children have to spend and monitor how that money is spent.

• Know who your children's friends are and keep their friend’s and parent’s telephone numbers available for your use.

• Create a rewards-based chore and responsibility schedule. Reward good behavior and goal-oriented chores, tasks, and academics.

• Participate in your children's lives: attend their sports events, musical or theatrical accomplishments, oversee their homework and remain knowledgeable about their grades and academic performance, participate in activities together, and talk with them about drugs.
• Identify the stress in your child's life and help them, offering individual therapy or boarding school, adolescent residential rehab, and alternative solutions.

1. To combat loneliness, low self-esteem, anxiety, or depression

2. To mentally ‘check-out’ of family issues or school troubles

Help for Teen Prescription Drug Addiction

When "drug addiction" brings to mind substances such as cocaine and marijuana, it's no wonder less attention is given to the dangers of legal drugs. The non - medical use of prescription medicine is increasing especially among teenagers and has become a major public health issue with deaths related to prescription drug overdose and addiction being reported on a daily basis. With the abuse of these drugs increasing over the past t decade, so has the need for rehab centers and treatment programs.

When a teen who had been battling an addiction to alcohol and prescription drugs for 4 years, decided he really wanted to get help he faced a two-month wait to enter an addiction treatment program in his hometown. His parents called other facilities, but because they were all out of state and they did not want to stay away from their child, they made the decision to wait. Sadly, 18 days later, their son died of an overdose.

Unfortunately, loving your child has to take on a new meaning when addiction is involved, as for most parents/guardians there is no time to spare. Location of treatment should not be an issue. Although there are very few adolescent addiction treatment centers across the US, you must find the help you need even if it is somewhere across the country. BOTTOM LINE IS, DON'T WAIT. DON'T MAKE THE LOCATION TO BE AN ISSUE. A parent will suffer no greater pain than losing a child, which might be one outcome when the child is abusing drugs.

To keep up with the need of specialized adolescent addiction treatment center, Inspirations for Youth and Families, aka Inspirations Teen Rehab, with its main location in Florida, is now opening new locations. Inspirations Teen Rehab is a nationally recognized, premier residential addiction treatment center which provides a positive environment to help teen addicts or teens that are in the pre stage of addiction to deal with their physical and physiological dependences.

The Challanges Teens Face When Going Back to School

Is it safe for our teens to return to school? It's becoming harder to keep our teens away from drugs during the middle and high schools years. Some of the interesting challenges teens face when returning to school is making choices about who to be friends with and facing peer pressure in an environment where drug use is only increasing. If you are a concerned parent wondering what you can do to intervene, there are some ways you can help your child. There are pamphlets, books, dvds, and drug education booklets available online as well as websites with plenty of information. Talking with your teen and making sure that they are aware of the effects and consequences associated with drug use and abuse can help them make informed decisions when approached by their peers. When they are educated on what drugs are, what they look like, and what they can do to a person, they are less likely to be conned into taking drugs. Independent studies show that teens and children who have received education from parents, books and pamphlets report a significant decrease in drug use or in the potential to use drugs.

For those parents that are already struggling with a teen who has experimented with drugs or who is addicted, there is help available. Rehabilitation/drug addiction treatment is proven to be successful in helping teens with drug abuse problems. The most important part is acting before the problem gets worse and selecting the right addiction treatment facility for your teen. Parents need to make the right choice for their children, especially when they see that their teens are making the wrong choices and turning to drugs. It is tough and intimidating to confront your teen about their drug problem, but the dangerous effects of drugs are far worse than those personal fears. Keep in touch with your teen.

Drugs in general are highly addictive and addiction is a medical condition. A user is trying to achieve the same high that they felt on their first use. However, a user can never get the same high. It only takes one use of a drug to become addicted. It only takes one use to overdose or die. Like all medical conditions, treatment is necessary.

If you or someone you know is struggling with drug abuse or addiction and is in need of help, Inspirations Teen Drug Rehab offers a flexible and affordable teen addiction treatment program. Our aim is to treat the whole person, and not just an isolated symptom. During the treatment process we will work with the teen to identify the factors that may have contributed to you drug abuse – home, friends and medical history. We also believe that families have a vital role to play in the recovery process, and each addiction treatment program has a place for family participation, to educate them in the treatment process and to equip them for their role as supporters.

The Dangers of Huffing

One in five students in America has used an inhalant to get high by the time he or she reaches the eighth grade. The largest demographic to abuse are teenagers ages 12 to 17. The next group that follows them is the 18 to 25 age group. Huffing is extremely dangerous. Huffing involves inhaling volatile substances, in order to get high.

One of the greatest dangers of huffing is that it can kill a person in the very first time they try. About 22% of deaths that occur because of huffing are by people who did it for the first time. If huffing does not kill you the first time, the effects of huffing can kill your body slowly. The volatile substances can kill brain cells. Once these cells are lost, they will never come back. In addition to this, huffing can cause memory loss, impaired concentration, hearing loss, loss of coordination, and permanent brain damage. Chronic use can cause permanent heart, lung, liver, and kidney damage as well. Another long term effect of huffing is the psychiatric issue such as, depression, mood changes, irritability, and inattentiveness.

Lastly, here are some sign that you should be aware of:
-Drunk, dazed, or dizzy appearance
- Slurred or disoriented speech
- Uncoordinated physical symptoms
- Red or runny eyes and nose

- Spots and/or sores around the mouth
- Unusual breath odor or chemical odor on clothing
- Signs of paint or other products where they wouldn't normally be, such as on face, lips, nose or fingers
- Nausea and/or loss of appetite
- Chronic Inhalant Abusers may exhibit symptoms such as hallucinations, anxiety, excitability, irritability, restlessness or anger.

While several of these warning signs may point to occasional problems most teens experience at some point during the teenage years, don't be fooled. Know what specific signs may signal real trouble for your child.

In addition to this, you should recognize other telltale behavior signs of Inhalant Abusers:
- Painting fingernails with magic markers or correction fluid
- Sitting with a pen or marker by the nose
- Constantly smelling clothing sleeves
- Showing paint or stain marks on face, fingers or clothing
- Having numerous butane lighters and refills in room, backpack or locker (when the child does not smoke)
- Hiding rags, clothes or empty containers of the potentially abused products in closets, under the bed, in garage etc

Huffing is an addictive behavior and a growing addiction among the adolescent/teen population. Seek professional assistance immediately.
