Why Adolescent and Adult Addiction Treatment Methods are Different?

With a growing population of adolescents succumbing to drugs illegal substances, more and more families are finding themselves struggling to help their children get back on the right track.

When it comes to treatment methods and rehabilitation techniques, biological factors must be taken into consideration. Adolescents have smaller physiques and under developed brains; making them susceptible to addiction due to lower tolerance. Furthermore, they are less likely to voluntarily seek treatment and are often coerced by family members to do so, often resulting in deficient treatment or simply refusing help.

Distinguishing and understanding the vast differences between adolescent and adult addiction and its underlying reasons, is key to achieving effective treatment in different developmental phases and age groups.

Juvenile Court Judge Demchick-Alloy stresses accountability

It's every parent's nightmare to see their child standing before a judge, but when the judge is juvenile court judge Wendy Demchick-Alloy, tough love may be what is needed.

Judge Demchick-Alloy's attention to police and psychologists’ reports helps her to pass justice for the many young boys and girls that engage in unlawful acts. With tough but fair reactions, the juvenile detainees both respect the judge and fear her. Recently, a 17 year old girl was brought back into court after being caught with marijuana while she was awaiting trial for another drug related charge. Judge Demchick-Alloy felt responsible to not only make sure the young girl understood her mistakes but also was given enough incentive to make her want to change her course of life.

Counts like these seem overwhelming, but for the judge who also spends a lot of time visiting various youth detention centers and programs across the state. Young offenders line up to discuss problems with her, many suffering from various problems such as psychological, substance, alcohol or physical abuse.

Those who have succeeded in straightening out their mistakes stop by to thank her.

"Each kid is an individual,” she says. “It could be any of our kids, How would I want my kids to be treated if they were in here? How would I want the judge to behave? That’s how I do my job. This is someone’s child." Outstanding judge or not, one can only hope that young individuals stay out of trouble and out of juvenile detention halls.

The need to implement effective prevention and treatment of drug and alcohol abuse for teens

In a study sponsored by MetLife Foundation, released on April 6, 2011, the trend in alcohol and drug abuse in teens was shown to be in need of immediate attention.

In a study sponsored by MetLife Foundation, released on April 6, 2011, the trend in alcohol and drug abuse in teens was shown to be in need of immediate attention.

The 2010 Partnership Attitude Tracking Study consists of two nationally projectable samples: a survey that measures attitudes and behaviors of parents with children ages 10 to 19 that relate to substance abuse and a teen sample for students in grades nine through 12.

New data from the study on alcohol use shows that drinking is often considered to be acceptable behavior among teens – less risky and more approved of than abuse of other substances. These beliefs are critically important: data from the University of Michigan’s annual “Monitoring the Future” survey of 8th, 10th and 12th grade high school students, going back to 1975, show that teens’ perceptions of the risk and social disapproval of drug use correlate very closely with drug taking behavior – more closely than demographic characteristics such as race / ethnicity, socio-economic status or geography.

The average age of first use among teens is 14 years old. One quarter had their first drink by the age of 12 and by age 15 six out of 10 teens have had their first drink. Age of first use is critically important: research has shown that more than 40 percent of those who start drinking at age 14 or younger developed alcohol dependence, compared with 10 percent of those who began drinking at age 20 or older.

Underlying this abuse of alcohol among teens is a low sense of risk in use. Almost half of teens do not see a “great risk” in heavy daily drinking. In addition only one in three strongly disapprove of “getting drunk” which means that seven out of 10 do not strongly disapprove of the behavior.

Teens believe that alcohol is drunk by kids because it is fun, makes parties more fun, and helps them fit in with their peers and not feel left out. Teens who have drunk alcohol in the past year say the primarily reason why they do it is because it is fun. At the same time, while having fun and social motivations are the most frequently endorsed reasons for use, over a third of teens are drinking to cope with problems. Drinking alcohol for coping reasons in adolescence is a predictor of later problem use.

About one in seven teens feels they may have a problem with alcohol – either reporting they are worried about their drinking or they drink because it is a habit. Again, heavy alcohol use at an early age, when teens’ brains are still developing, can alter reward pathways in the brain and foreshadow later problem use.

Parents concede that they think most teens will try beer occasionally; however, the majority doesn’t believe their child has drunk alcohol at all.

Additionally, based on this study, a disturbing trend confirmed the significant increases in adolescent abuse of marijuana and Ecstasy.

All measures of marijuana use (ever tried, past year, past month) continue last year’s significant increases versus 2008.

Past year and past month Ecstasy use continue last year’s significant increases versus 2008.

The 2010 data also indicated that downward trends in LSD and cigarette use, which began flattening out in 2007, may be poised for an increase.

This study provides a significant support to the argument that families need to take action in identification and treatment of alcohol and drug abuse amongst teens. If there is any hope in stopping the destructive effects of addictions in society, specifically the lives of the most impressionable members of the society, that hope is to implement effective prevention and treatment of drug and alcohol abuse now.

Adolescent Heroin Addiction Epidemic in Western New York

At about a fraction of the cost of other recreational drugs used to obtain hallucinogenic effects, the widespread availability and affordability of heroin is now taking the lives of teens who specifically seek this drug because of low costs.

The problem which can be considered a national epidemic seems to be particularly affecting the teens of Western New York, as it has become the latest fad amongst local teenagers.

Reports have shown that many teens have died from consuming what are commonly known as “tainted batches” of heroin, and that because of the affordability factor of this drug, “tainted” batches are commonly used to replace genuine batches; leaving the young victims unaware of their doomed fate.

A recovering addict who is now a drug counselor, Nick Manuszewski believes the region is “experiencing a heroin-use spike of unbelievable proportion." He also stated that teens often travel to Buffalo's West Side to purchase their heroin, which is where investigators believe the tainted batches of heroin originated from.

A recovering addict himself, Manuszewski warned that "Pills and prescription opiates had surpassed marijuana as the most commonly used drug in the United States," and that this should be an eye opener for families and officials.

Overdoses in Arriba County, NM Highest in State

The state Health Department released statistics in February that paint a grave picture of the state of health in Rio Arriba County, New Mexico, on various fronts.

Rio Arriba’s death rates due to drug overdoses and alcohol abuse, were among the highest in the state. Department data shows that from 2007 through 2009, the period during which the statistics were compiled, 133 people in the County died from alcohol abuse, 65 from drug overdoses.

The County’s health status is more stark when compared with statistics from neighboring counties such as Los Alamos, Santa Fe and Sandoval, which display positive results in many health statistics. The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, a philanthropic organization devoted to public health, compiled various statistics on each county in New Mexico and released them in 2010, ranking Los Alamos, Santa Fe and Sandoval Counties first, second and third, respectively, for overall county health.

Rio Arriba County ranked 32nd out of 32 counties, as Harding County was not ranked.

On average, local youth begin using marijuana at ten years of age and then within four to six months they move on to other illegal substances. Children as young as 12 are brought in to the emergency room in New Mexico for treatment for illicit drug overdoses.

The prices for illegal substances are very affordable, and sales are accessible. For example, heavily-cut doses of cocaine cost little more than five bucks, but the poor product quality results in short highs and intensified desires for more and more dosages.

One nurse in New Mexico said the majority of teens report the following pattern of drug abuse: marijuana, cocaine, ecstasy, crack and methamphetamine, in that order, were the most popular drugs reported by teens that ended up at the emergency room.

If you are a parent, loved one or a teen seeking the help of teen addiction treatment centers, Inspirations Rehab recommends programs where teens can immerse themselves in a whole new way of life, where accountability, life skills and recreational activities are part of the teens daily routine.
