Northfolk County Launching Program to Raise Parent Awareness About Opiod Abuse

With opiate-overdose deaths currently the leading cause of accidental death in the U.S, many believe that more needs to be done in order to prevent the severe consequences of opiate abuse.

District Attorney Michael Morrissey, currently serving Massachusetts Norfolk County, will soon be launching a series of cable access shows; providing parents with useful advice on how to talk to their kids about the many dangers and consequences of opiate usage.

Morrissey who believes that parents are key to stopping opiates from consuming their children, has also emphasized the importance of effective education; stating just how important small investments are in education, especially when it comes to the prevention of many senseless crimes that not only cause emotional suffering, but who become costly and detrimental to taxpayers in already troubled times.

Most teenagers turn to prescription drugs because they perceive them as less dangerous than illegal drugs. Because of this, teenage prescription drug abuse is on the rise.

Teens who abuse or are addicted to prescription opioid medications can be treated. Initially, they may need to undergo medically supervised detoxification to help reduce withdrawal symptoms; however, that is just the first step. Options for effectively treating addiction to prescription opioids are drawn from research on treating heroin addiction. Behavioral treatments, usually combined with medications, have been proven extremely effective.

Idaho Teen Addiction Treatment Programs

Inspirations for Youth and Families aka Inspirations Teen Rehab, is a nationally recognized, licensed residential addiction treatment center, for teens ages 14 to 18 and their families, who are struggling with the chaos of
teen behaviors and the consequences associated with alcohol and/or drug addiction, which may include mental health issues, more commonly known as dual-diagnosis. At Inspirations Teen Rehab we understand your concern for your teenager and the changing behaviors causing heartbreak and fear for your teen’s safety and future.

Inspirations’ teen addiction treatment programs focuses on all aspects of teen behavioral issues. Family is the cornerstone of Inspirations’ teen addiction treatment center. Teens attending Inspirations’ are using or abusing drugs, often beginning with marijuana. Often, marijuana is the only drug or substance used by a teen. However, drug use becomes drug abuse and eventually leads to drug addiction. Marijuana historically leads to other drugs. Drugs combined with behaviors that demonstrate disrespect for parents, home rules, boundaries, and lack of accountability for actions, are typically an explosive combination that leads to significant and sometimes irreversible consequences.

Interventions
are necessary for individuals who are unable or unwilling to recognize the need for help. Interventionists assist families in confronting and guiding their loved one to recognize the signs and symptoms of addiction and the need for change. Credentialed and experienced Interventionists are available to assist individuals and family members.

Teen Drug Detox in Idaho / Teen Drug Detoxification in Idaho
Normally, those suffering from a drug addiction cannot safely detox on their own. In fact, in some cases, attempting to do so can be deadly. During the drug detoxification process, the body is denied the toxins usually accumulated by the drug, resulting in uncomfortable and in some cases dangerous drug withdrawal symptoms. Sometimes a drug with a similar action is taken instead, to reduce the side effects and risks of withdrawal. Detoxification is often the first step in a drug addiction treatment program and should be followed by addiction treatment therapies. Behavioral-based therapy and/or a medication (if necessary) are available during Drug Detoxification in Idaho. Detox alone with no follow-up is not an addiction treatment.

There are a number of Idaho drug detox programs available. Studies have shown that inpatient drug detox programs are usually more successful than outpatient detox, due in large part to the fact that they are medically based programs located within a drug rehab facility or addiction treatment center.

Facts About Alcohol Abuse in Nebraska

Alcohol is an addictive substance. Alcohol is a depressant, addictive drug. It is a controlled substance for a great number of Nebraska citizens (namely all of those citizens under the age of 21).

Alcohol causes illness and death.

Each year, alcohol kills over 120,000 Americans. At least 25% of all hospital visits are related to the use of alcohol.

Alcohol is the number one preventable cause of death among young people.

Alcohol use is related to over one-half of all car crashes, suicides, drownings, falls, homicides, traumas and other causes of death among America’s -- and Nebraska’s --adolescents. Over 90% of college hazing deaths are alcohol-related. One August 1996 studying Douglas and Sarpy County found that news accounts listed that 37 people had died in these two counties under circumstances directly related to underage alcohol consumption since January 1, 1990.

Alcohol use is related to one-half of all problems plaguing teenagers in America.
Alcohol use is related to at least one-half of all crime, violence, rapes, sexual activity, poor school performance, assaults, accidents and other problems among underage populations in America – and Nebraska.

Almost all first users of alcohol are under the age of 21.

Adults rarely initiate alcohol use. 90% of all high school seniors have tried alcohol, usually without the permission of their parents or guardians. 80% of these seniors are regular alcohol users, namely, they have used alcohol within the past month. Nebraska adolescents usually use alcohol at rates higher than the national average.

At least 8 million American teenagers drink alcohol every week.

Teens from across the United States, including Nebraska, report that it is easy to obtain alcohol. Seven million American teens report that they are able to walk into a store and purchase alcohol. Jr. and Sr. high school students in the U.S. drink 1.1 billion cans of beer each year.

Nebraska’s young people use alcohol at a higher rate than the national average.
Nebraska adolescents have consistently used alcohol and reported binge drinking (at least 5 drinks in a row at one sitting) at a much higher rate than the national average.

Alcohol is a gateway drug.
Like tobacco and marijuana, alcohol is a gateway drug. It’s use is a strong predictor of future drug use and problem alcohol use. The average age of first use of alcohol in Nebraska is 12 years of age.

Adolescent Heroin Addiction Epidemic in Western New York

At about a fraction of the cost of other recreational drugs used to obtain hallucinogenic effects, the widespread availability and affordability of heroin is now taking the lives of teens who specifically seek this drug because of low costs.

The problem which can be considered a national epidemic seems to be particularly affecting the teens of Western New York, as it has become the latest fad amongst local teenagers.

Reports have shown that many teens have died from consuming what are commonly known as “tainted batches” of heroin, and that because of the affordability factor of this drug, “tainted” batches are commonly used to replace genuine batches; leaving the young victims unaware of their doomed fate.

A recovering addict who is now a drug counselor, Nick Manuszewski believes the region is “experiencing a heroin-use spike of unbelievable proportion." He also stated that teens often travel to Buffalo's West Side to purchase their heroin, which is where investigators believe the tainted batches of heroin originated from.

A recovering addict himself, Manuszewski warned that "Pills and prescription opiates had surpassed marijuana as the most commonly used drug in the United States," and that this should be an eye opener for families and officials.

Overdoses in Arriba County, NM Highest in State

The state Health Department released statistics in February that paint a grave picture of the state of health in Rio Arriba County, New Mexico, on various fronts.

Rio Arriba’s death rates due to drug overdoses and alcohol abuse, were among the highest in the state. Department data shows that from 2007 through 2009, the period during which the statistics were compiled, 133 people in the County died from alcohol abuse, 65 from drug overdoses.

The County’s health status is more stark when compared with statistics from neighboring counties such as Los Alamos, Santa Fe and Sandoval, which display positive results in many health statistics. The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, a philanthropic organization devoted to public health, compiled various statistics on each county in New Mexico and released them in 2010, ranking Los Alamos, Santa Fe and Sandoval Counties first, second and third, respectively, for overall county health.

Rio Arriba County ranked 32nd out of 32 counties, as Harding County was not ranked.

On average, local youth begin using marijuana at ten years of age and then within four to six months they move on to other illegal substances. Children as young as 12 are brought in to the emergency room in New Mexico for treatment for illicit drug overdoses.

The prices for illegal substances are very affordable, and sales are accessible. For example, heavily-cut doses of cocaine cost little more than five bucks, but the poor product quality results in short highs and intensified desires for more and more dosages.

One nurse in New Mexico said the majority of teens report the following pattern of drug abuse: marijuana, cocaine, ecstasy, crack and methamphetamine, in that order, were the most popular drugs reported by teens that ended up at the emergency room.

If you are a parent, loved one or a teen seeking the help of teen addiction treatment centers, Inspirations Rehab recommends programs where teens can immerse themselves in a whole new way of life, where accountability, life skills and recreational activities are part of the teens daily routine. K2 Use and Abuse in Michigan

Protecting kids from illegal substances is a priority on every parent’s list. There is at least relief that illegal drugs are harder for kids to obtain thus decreasing the chances of drug use. But is this really the case? One family learned the hard way that perhaps illegal substances aren’t the only enemy.

Thirteen year old Garrett Gordon of Bellevue, Michigan put himself in a dire situation after using an illegal drug commonly known as K2. This drug is said to have the same effects of marijuana and had been illegal for some time until former Governor of Michigan, Jennifer Granholm, signed a bill which inadvertently legalized this dangerous drug.

Many kids are easily getting their hands on the K2 drug and the consequences are threatening their lives. Gordon claims the drug made him so sick that he rushed home with symptoms that made his mother believe he had the flu. It was only when Garrett, scared that he would die, admitted that he had been smoking K2 that his mother rushed him to the emergency room.

The danger of K2 is why House Bill 6038 outlawed it last September. Rick Jones introduced the bill when he was still a State Representative. "Unfortunately last year Governor Granholm signed a bill that inadvertently made K2 legal," said Senator Rick Jones. He also stated that K2 would soon be a felony to sell.

Jones is also working with Community Health to make sure K2 copy cats can be outlawed. Parents are doing what they can to protect their kids from illegal drugs but perhaps it’s time they are made aware of harmful, legal substances already on the market.

If you are a friend or family member of a young adult struggling with drug abuse, call Inspirations for help.

Drug Policies and the Evolving Trends

In this day and age, although society seems to be growing and expanding faster than people can keep up with it, science and technology still strive to stay ahead of the game. But who are the “trendsetters” and whose best interest do they have at heart? When it comes to substance abuse– the play changes and ball is always in somebody else’s court. Teenagers are turning to drugs of the day before they get banned. States have generally updated their controlled substance laws through the legislative process, but there is growing pressure for that to change. New regulations or updates to existing laws often take multiple attempts and years to gain legislative approval, which means many substances that prove to be harmful and even on occasions deadly, stay legal and remain on the market. Parents of teenagers are very worried for their kids’ safety. They see their kids taking substances such as salvia, a leafy sage plant that produces a hallucinogenic effect. It is smoked, chewed or taken in a potent distilled liquid extract form. The drug, which is legal, recently was in the news being used by Iowa teens. It costs as little as $9 a hit. The U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency has issued warnings about the substance and this is the fifth consecutive year that state officials have tried to ban the drug, but still, to no avail. This is at least the third or fourth time that this salvia bill has been presented, Mark Smith of the state public defender's office told lawmakers last week. He added that if somebody besides the Legislature had the authority to regulate where these drugs go, this could have been dealt with four or five years ago.

Some state and national drug control advocates said it would be in everyone’s best interest to adopt a process similar to the one in Minnesota. There, the state's board of pharmacy can update controlled substance laws on its own; a process that often can be completed in four to six months vs. potentially years through the legislative process. However, the Minnesota Legislature can review or make changes as it sees fit. "In Wisconsin, a controlled substance board can update or enact the state's rules on potentially harmful drugs. That process, which can take more than a year, involves review from a legislative committee. The National Association of Boards of Pharmacy, a professional advocacy group in Illinois, also encourages states to adopt processes like those in Minnesota, where a regulatory board can change drug laws without needing legislative approval." - Jason Clayworth, DesMoinesRegister.com. Many legislatures, like Iowa, are in session only part of the year, making it hard for the state to quickly enact or update drug restrictions.

Legislators Hesitate to Give Power to Board Two Republican lawmakers on the House Public Safety Committee, which oversees much of the state's drug law, expressed deep concerns about the prospect of the Legislature turning over rule-making authority to a state board. "I'm all for making the code shorter, but the one hesitancy, especially for us who have been here for a while, is that the authority by rule-making just scares the bejesus out of us," said Rep. Tom Sands, R-Wapello, a member of the House Public Safety Committee. Rep. Mark Smith, D-Marshalltown, has introduced a bill, House File 29, that would grant the state's pharmacy board more temporary rule-making authority to place limits on controlled substances until the Legislature could meet to review the issues. "What scare the bejeebies out of me is young people accessing these substances," Smith said. "My feeling is that it's in the public's interest to be able to act quickly and get these substances off of the market."

The truth is that this is a frightening issue if not given enough attention. Teenagers are now more than ever looking to their peers for the latest trends. Substance abuse is increasingly becoming popular and the old laws and legislations are not holding down the fort. Perhaps it is time for some real change. If you are a parent/guardian of a teen that is abusing or addicted to drugs and need guidance, please call or helpline below.
