TEENS AND POST TRAUMATIC STRESS DISORDER

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is one of the primary causes of self-medicating substance abuse behaviors that can lead to teen alcohol abuse and addiction and/or teen drug abuse and teen drug addiction. Recognizing and seeking treatment for PTSD and addiction, allows an individual to focus on the process of changing behaviors, improving coping skills, finding solutions to problems, and working through the process of addiction recovery.

The DSM-IV-TR, defines traumatic events as: “Traumatic events that are experienced directly include, but are not limited to, violent personal assault (sexual assault, physical attack, robbery, mugging), being kidnapped, terrorist attack, incarceration, natural or man made disasters, automobile accidents, military combat, or being diagnosed with a life-threatening illness.” P.463. Perception of a traumatic event not mentioned above is also relevant, as we all perceive events in our lives differently. Witnessed events are considered traumatic. Divorce, either as the child of divorce or the marital partner of a divorce, can elicit PTSD, as well as contribute to abandonment issues. The DSM-IV-TR, aka Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, is the manual by which mental health professionals diagnose and review criteria for treatment.

Marijuana is still the "gateway" drug.

For years we have been told that Marijuana is the "gateway" drug for teens who are more likely to struggle with drug abuse or addiction. Recent studies now demonstrate the truth in Marijuana as a "gateway" drug. According to SAMHSA (www.samhsa.gov), in 2008, the specific drug categories with the largest number of recent initiates (first time drug users) among persons aged 12 or older were marijuana use (2.2 million) and use of pain relievers (2.2 million), followed by use of tranquilizers (1.1 million), Ecstasy (0.9 million), inhalants (0.7 million), cocaine (0.7 million), and stimulants (0.6 million).
In summary, marijuana was the illicit drug with the highest rate of past year dependence or abuse in 2008, followed by pain relievers and cocaine.
Most parents who call Inspirations Teen Addiction Treatment Center, with reports of marijuana addiction, are very well aware of the addictive behaviors associated with use of marijuana. Most parents or loved ones reporting a teen addiction, also report a beginning use of marijuana, leading to marijuana abuse and then other drugs and a "preferred drug of choice. If you suspect or know a teen in your family is abusing or addicted to drugs (including marijuana), get help immediately. Teen Addiction Treatment Centers are instrumental in the recovery process of Teen Drug Abuse and Addiction.

New Jersey Teen Addiction

Teen drug abuse and teen addiction is being taken seriously in the state of New Jersey. A recent article in a Cape May County newspaper, addressed the issue of teen drinking, by providing the following information: "According to the New Jersey Prevention Network, the average age of first use of alcohol is now 11 years old and the research further indicates that young people in New Jersey appear to be experimenting with alcohol at a rate above that reported nationally. Approximately 407,000 underage youth in the state drink each year." "According to a report in the Journal of Substance Abuse, more than 40% of individuals who start drinking before the age of 13 will develop alcohol abuse problems later in life. "Teens need to realize their brains are still developing until they are in their mid 20s and alcohol abuse could have long term consequences."
Prevention is the first step in addressing teen addiction. Preventing teen alcohol addiction begins with good communication between parents and teens. Teens who feel comfortable approaching their parents with challenging situations, peer pressure, and teen problems, are more likely to reach out to their parents, when help is needed.
Teen alcohol addiction and teen drug addiction are national problems, surfacing in every city throughout the United States. New Jersey has been a state which faces problems head-on and seeks to find resolution quickly. It is comforting to read and know, the residents of New Jersey are openly discussing teen addiction and seeking solutions for their youth.

TEEN ADDICTION STATISTICS

According to www.samhsa.gov, in 2008 22 .2 million teens, 12 - 17 years old, were classified with substance dependence (addiction) or substance abuse. Of these 22.2 million teens, 3.1 million were classified with addiction or abuse of both alcohol and illicit drugs. 3.9 million teens were addicted to or abused illicit drugs but NOT alcohol. 15.2 million teens were addicted ot or abused alcohol but NOT illicit drugs. The 2008 report further provides statistics indicating 60.6 percent of 12 - 17 year old teens, not only were addicted to or abuse drugs, but were the largest percentage of people addicted to or abusing drugs. In comparison, 37.4 percent of adults ages 18 -25 years old, were addicted to or abused drugs. What does this report convey to parents, teens, families, and professionals working with teens? It conveys to us that teens are the highest "risk" age group to become addicted to alcohol or drugs It is an alarming statistic. Imagine, a 12 year old playing baseball or cheerleading. Now imagine that same 12 year old, addicted to oxycontin and the chaos it causes for the teen and family. Teen lives are destroyed by the overwhelming availability of alcohol and prescription narcotic drugs and marijuana. It is imperative that we (as a society), become informed of the increasing availability of alcohol and drugs in the teen population. We need to recognize the peer pressure for teens to engage in alcohol and drug use, and the lack of teen coping skills, which often lead a teen to using alcohol and drugs and subsequently results in teen addiction. We must educate ourselves on the signs and symptoms of teen addiction and act quickly to restore a teen to a healthy life and preserve their future opportunities. If you are seeking information on teen drug abuse or teen addiction, education on teen drugs, or if you are ready to consider a teen addiction treatment center, for your teen, please go to: www.inspirationsteenrehab.com.

Teen Marijuana Addiction

Teen Marijuana Addiction is common and overlooked as a serious teen addiction. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, regarding marijuana in 2007, teens are four times more likely to use marijuana as compared to adults. Marijuana alters mind and mood. It is addictive. Teens abusing marijuana demonstrate the same behaviors as teens abusing prescription narcotic drugs and non-prescription narcotic drugs. Behaviors include changes that interfere with the teens ability to fulfill the demands of his/her daily routine, mood changes, decline in school grade point average, change in friends, reduced time spent with family, change in body weight, and notable unpredictable behaviors. Statistics continue to report that marijuana is still the"gateway" drug. Teens using, abusing, or addicted to marijuana are more likely to seek additional narcotic drugs to continue the search for another "high", ultimately increasing a teen's probability for becoming a teen drug addict. If a parent or family member suspects or knows a teen is abusing or addicted to marijuana, it is advisable to intervene and seek the help of an adolescent addiction treatment center.

Why Early Intervention?

"Early intervention" means that your teen will be entering addiction treatment before the addiction takes over their lives. Take control of the situation while your teen is on his/her pre-stage of addiction. It is important to interfere as soon as you suspect your child is using drugs or abusing alcohol. Adolescents are more likely to abuse multiple substances (with prescription pills enjoying a recent surge in popularity). Also, studies have shown that teens are more likely to attempt suicide than addicted adults. Usually teens start substance abuse in a social setting and before they realize, drugs starts running their lives. Their daily focus turns into getting drugs and “getting high”. There is no one best way to talk your child into getting help and get them into an addiction treatment center. Most often then not, they do not admit they have a problem. They think everything under control. It is up to you as a parent to find out what is happening to your teen and get professional help when needed.

Sometimes your child’s pediatrician or family doctor can help. Most often parents will need professional "interventionists" to help their teens understand the need for treatment. Our teen addiction treatment center provides counselors to help with interventions. We at Inspirations Youth and Families understand that intervention is always a difficult situation, but we know, the alternative of doing nothing is the worst thing a parent can do.

Inspirations is here to help your teen and your family through this difficult process. To learn more about our teen addiction treatment services, please contact us.
