This year survey results, released in December 2011,indicate that overall drug use, as measured by past month use of any illicit drug,in each of the three grades was unchanged from last year.

That is, there were no statistically significant changes.However, a number of drug categories showed statistically significantreductions between 2010 and 2011 for some grades.Theseinclude the following declines:

Past-year use of Vicodin among 10^thgraders (7.7% to 5.9%)

Past-year use of any illicit drug,including inhalants, among 8th graders (20.3% to 18.2%)

Past-year use of inhalants among 8th graders(8.1% to 7.0%)

Past-year use of inhalants among 10th graders(5.7% to 4.5%)

Past-year use of crack cocaine among12th graders (1.4% to 1.0%)

Past-year use of amphetamines among 10^thgraders (7.6% to 6.6%)

Past-year use of tranquilizers among 8th graders(2.8% to 2.0%)

Past-year use of over-the-countercough/cold medicine among 12^th graders (6.6% to 5.3%)

Past-month use of hallucinogens otherthan LSD among 12th graders (1.5% to 1.2%)

Past-year and past-month use of Ecstasyamong 8th graders (2.4% to 1.7% and 1.1% to 0.6%, respectively) and

Past-year use of androstenedione (asteroid) among 12thgraders (1.5% to 0.7%)

A Call for Action: New Informationon the Use of Synthetic Marijuana

One of the most noteworthy findings of the latestMTF survey involved the use by 12^th graders of synthetic marijuana(specifically “Spice” and “K2”), which consists of leaves of an ordinary plantsprayed by chemicals that mimic the mind-altering effects of marijuana.

The 2011 MTF study included for the first time aquestion on past-year use of synthetic marijuana among high school seniors. Theresults indicate that the prevalence of use in the past year among 12^thgraders was estimated at 11.4%. Synthetic marijuana ranks as the second mostfrequently used illicit substance, after marijuana, among high school seniors.

Actionto Address This New Threat:

In September 2011, the DEA used itsemergency scheduling authority to ban the sale of the chemicals used tomanufacture K2 and Spice.

ONDCP has brought together public healthand safety agencies from across the Federal Government to share data andcoordinate the Federal response to new synthetic drugs.

The House of Representatives passedlegislation that would ban synthetic drugs to include those marketed as “bathsalts”.(And many states have taken action to ban the chemicals found in K2 andSpice, as well.)

Given the latest data, ONDCP will bereaching out to a nationwide network of state and local public health andsafety organizations to provide them with the latest information on this publichealth threat and spur action at the local level.

Synthetic Marijuana May Pose an Even Greater Psychosis Risk

According to a news release from the DEA at the time of the ban, syntheticcannabis (smokeable herbal products, Spice) have become especially popular withteens and young adults because they are marketed as being legal whilecontaining chemicals that supposedly mimic THC.

"Young people are being harmed when they smoke these dangerous 'fake pot'products and wrongly equate the products' 'legal’ retail availability withbeing 'safe,' “added DEA administrator Michele M. Leonhart in the news release.

"Thesechemicals, however, have not been approved by the FDA for human consumption,and there is no oversight of the manufacturing process," writes the DEA. Syntheticcannabis is often labeled as "herbal incense" and reportedly causescannabis-like psychoactive effects. Its use led to hundreds of visits toemergency departments since 2010.

Synthetic cannabis products pose a risk for psychosis in users, including thosewith no prior history of a psychiatric disorder. Spice may pose an even greaterrisk of psychosis when compared with the natural product as it lacks the antipsychoticprotective agents found in natural cannabis. These findings were presented atthe American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry (AAAP) 22nd Annual Meeting &Symposium.

Alan J. Budny,PhD, from the Center for Addiction Research at the University of Arkansas forMedical Sciences in Little Rock, warns parents that some teens use syntheticcannabis to "beat the tests" done todetect marijuana use. As Spice does not getpicked up on the regular drug tests parents should look for more sensitivetests that are now being developed and marketed to test synthetic marijuana.

Teens Who Can Express Themselves Are More Likely to Avoid Drugs

New research shows that teens who are able to express themselves to their moms are better able to resist peer pressure and say no to drugs and alcohol.

The findings appear in Allen J.P. Child Development, 2011

Researchers interviewed more than 150 teens and their parents about substance use and abuse, daily interactions, and relationships with friends. The teens who were able to hold their own in discussions with their moms particularly about grades, money, rules, and friends were better prepared to stand up to their peers, the study showed.

“Parents who can have the right kind of discussions with their kids are setting their children up to handle peer influences,” says study author Dave Szwedo. He is a doctoral student at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville.

What are the right kinds of discussions? “They are calm and reasonable,” he says. “They are not based on shouting or whining. They allow kids a chance to be heard.”

The findings make sense to says Gail Saltz, MD, a New York City-based psychiatrist who has teen daughters. “The mother-daughter relationship is a template for a lot of future relationships and how to manage them,” she says.

Adolescence is the time of finding your own identity. “Disagreement is part of this gig, and some parents and kids deal with this better than others,” Saltz says.

Home needs to be a place where teens can process emotions -- pain, disappointment, and anxiety -- in a healthy way, if they can’t, they may turn toward drugs and alcohol or be more susceptible to peer pressure.

What is the Difference Between "Opioids" and "Opiates"?

Adolescent Substance Abuse and Psychiatric Comorbidities

Substance use disorders have a serious impact on adolescents because these disorders have high prevalence rates and frequent associations with psychiatric disorders. Surveys of adolescent behaviors and substance use show that alcohol is the most common substance abused by adolescents. Despite the high rates of current alcohol use and binge drinking among adolescents, current diagnostic criteria are problematic. Adolescents may have a developing problem with substance dependence but not meet criteria for either substance abuse or dependence. At-risk adolescents, called "diagnostic orphans," may meet only 1 or 2 criteria for alcohol dependence and no abuse criteria and therefore do not receive an alcohol use disorder diagnosis from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition, Text Revision. Adolescents with substance use disorders tend to have higher rates of comorbid psychiatric disorders and are more likely to report a history of trauma and physical and/or sexual abuse than adolescents without a substance use disorder. In addition, psychiatric disorders in adolescents often predate the substance use disorder. Once the substance use disorder develops, the psychiatric disorder may be further exacerbated.

With highly caffeinated energy drinks continuing to fly off stores shelves, physicians have raised serious concern over the consumption of such dangerous drinks, particularly those purchased and consumed by adolescents and children.

Best selling drinks contain about 80 milligrams of caffeine per 8 ounce serving but many products can contain up to 500 milligrams of caffeine which can cause dangerous side effects such as heart palpitations, dizziness, nausea and other complications which can be life threatening.

FDA regulations prohibit caffeine contents over 71 milligrams per 12 ounce in soft beverages, but fail to apply the same limits for energy drinks labeled as “dietary supplements”. Furthermore, manufacturers are exempt from listing caffeine content or all ingredients on the label, often using marketing terms such as "energy blend" or "proprietary blend” to boost their sales and elude FDA regulations.

Despite the controversy surrounding energy drinks and its consumption by athletes, many athletes confess to consuming energy drinks in order to increase their alertness and energy which ultimately enhances their performance. Many even equate energy drinks with coffee and strongly believe the use of popular energy drinks should not been outlawed or banned before athletic activity, as the active ingredient of most energy drinks is caffeine, a legal stimulant.

So with more and more energy drink manufacturers producing a wide variety of energy drinks, shots and dietary supplements in order to target vulnerable populations such as athletes, teens and children, parents need to monitor their children while discussing the dangers of popular energy drinks and supplements repeatedly advertised on TV.

The American Psychiatric Association uses the term “substance dependence” in place of “addiction” however the two terms are synonymous, or more precisely “substance dependence” = “substance addiction” (since gambling addiction is not substance dependence) and is defined as a maladaptive pattern of substance use leading to clinically significant impairment or distress.

To meet the criteria of Substance Dependence (addiction) as defined in the DSM-IV, a patient must meet 3 or more of the following occurring any time in the same 12-month period:

1, Tolerance, as defined by either of the following:
(a) A need for markedly increased amounts of the substance to achieve intoxication or the desired effect
or
(b) Markedly diminished effect with continued use of the same amount of the substance.

2. Withdrawal, as manifested by either of the following:
(a) The characteristic withdrawal syndrome for the substance
or
(b) The same (or closely related) substance is taken to relieve or avoid withdrawal symptoms.

3. The substance is often taken in larger amounts or over a longer period than intended.

4. There is a persistent desire or unsuccessful efforts to cut down or control substance use.

5. A great deal of time is spent in activities necessary to obtain the substance, use the substance, or recover from its effects.

6. Important social, occupational, or recreational activities are given up or reduced because of substance use.

7. The substance use is continued despite knowledge of having a persistent physical or psychological problem that is likely to have been caused or exacerbated by the substance (for example, current cocaine use despite recognition of cocaine-induced depression or continued drinking despite recognition that an ulcer
was made worse by alcohol consumption).

Due to the resulting confusion between the terms "physical dependence" and "substance dependence" there is some talk within the industry of reintroducing the term "addiction" because it is better understood and may pose less chance of confusion.

As the rates of teen prescription drug abuse continue to pose a public health threat at epidemic levels, many fear their teens will do almost anything in order to get their hands on prescription medication, which can be conveniently obtained in almost every household at practically no cost.

New Trend: Vodka-Soaked Gummy Bears

Consuming “vodka gummy bears” is now considered a dangerous new trend among teens whose parents would never assume an innocent bag of gummy bears lying in the fridge contained alcohol.

Vodka-soaked gummy bears, a do-it-yourself alcoholic candy, are becoming a national trend and Inspirations Teen Rehab wants parents and teachers to be on the lookout because most of us wouldn’t suspect a child with gummy candy is trying to get drunk.

While fads come and go, this one might stick around a little longer, as several videos on YouTube have been found given step by step instructions on how to prepare the vodka gummy bears to disguise alcohol consumption. Incidents have already been reported in New York and Nebraska of children soaking the candy in vodka or gin and then bringing the bloated bears to school.

“Impact”, a local group coaching Milwaukee teens on drug and alcohol prevention, has been reaching out to teens by providing them with young peer counselors they can relate to, which in this case, is an individual from the same generation who faces the same social challenges and peer pressure the teen faces while attending school.Kaela Wojtycski, a peer counselor wants her fellow teens to know that alcohol is not the long term solution to their problems. While many parents believe it’s harmless to allow their underage teen to drink alcohol during family events and gatherings, they are inadvertently subjecting themselves to potential civil and criminal lawsuits that could bear lifelong consequences for both the teen and the parents.

The organization emphasized that it is important for parents to understand the liability issues that can arise from a simple scenario such as allowing an underage teen to have glass of wine during a family gathering. Teens and Marijuana: Why Parents Should not Ignore

Daily marijuana use among young adults is at its highest levels since 1991. A national survey released in October shows that 17 million Americans — mostly teens or young adults — used pot in 2010. About 40% of those used it on 20 or more days in the past month, up from 36.7% in 2009.

The director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse, Nora Volkow, recently stated that “roughly one out of 10 people who try marijuana get addicted" and "young users were more vulnerable than older ones”. She also stated that because research hasn’t been able to identify the underlying reasons why some individuals become addicted and some don’t, it is safer to avoid the substance and its potential dangers. Furthermore, Volkow blames medicinal marijuana for undermining the serious side effects of marijuana by portraying it as beneficial to one’s health. Additionally, Volkow believes that “hearing about the medicinal benefits of marijuana makes people think it must not be harmful”.

Peter Delany of the Substance Abuse and Mental health Administration believes that marijuana has become the biggest drug problem in the United States considering how the number of its users has more than doubled in the past decade.

The media also plays an important role in decreasing the social stigma attached to marijuana by portraying it “cool” and “commonly used by every top athlete and celebrity”.

Chief of psychiatry at Kaiser Permanente in San Francisco, Dr. Mason Turner, says “Most teens don’t think about what comes next, and concerns about the future don’t enter into their decision making.”

Parents concerned about their teens devious habits regarding drugs should consider the following tips:

1-Trust your instincts

So often when parents witness “red flags” and other signs that indicate their teen headed towards trouble, they ignore their intuition. What to do when your teenager seems to loathe you

Most parents feel hurt when their teen shout back and rolls their eyes in disrespect. Nadine Kaslow, a psychologist specializing in kids and families at Atlanta’s Emory University believes that a major part of adolescence consists of separating and individuating, and therefore many kids feel the need to reject their parents in order to find their own identity. Furthermore, Dr. Stuart Goldman, director of psychiatric education at Boston’s Children's Hospital believes parents need to remember that their children need them, and no matter how harsh their comments seem to be, or how stubborn they are, they still want their parents around and by letting their teenager know that they will always be there for them, they will allow their teens to let their guard down and confide in them.

Limiting modern communication devices in the household

Teens spend a great portion of their time texting, chatting and talking on the phone and consider modern communication the best way to keep in touch with their friends. It is crucial that parents don’t ban them from using the internet, phone and other gadgets but rather set reasonable limits such as turning off their cell phones during dinner and not using the computer one hour prior to bedtime.

Goldman believes that parents should do some research and set reasonable curfews while allowing a 10 minute grace period. If teens continuously stay out past their curfew, stricter curfews should be reinforced and a family discussion should be held in order to determine where the teens are spending their time, and who they are spending it with.

Monitoring a teenagers social interactions

Bad friends can deeply influence a teen and effect the way he/she behaves both in school and out of school. Parents should closely monitor their child social interactions and make habits of getting to know their teen’s circle of close knit friends as this circle changes frequently. 2. Dexing. Getting high on products with dextromethorphan.

3. DXM. A common abbreviation for dextromethorphan, a drug in many cough and cold medicines; it's abused by some teens because it can cause hallucinations and dissociative effects at high doses.

4. Orange Crush. A term for some cough medicines with dextromethorphan. It may stem from the orange-colored syrup -- and packaging -- of brands like Delsym.

5. Poor man's PCP, or Poor man's X. Products with dextromethorphan, since they're cheap but can cause effects similar to those of PCP or ecstasy at high doses.

6. Red devils. Another term for Coricidin tablets or other cough medicines.

7. Red hots. A term for capsules or tablets with dextromethorphan. The term comes from their resemblance to the candy.

8. Robo. Usually a reference to cough syrup with dextromethorphan. It derives from the brand name Robitussin, but it is common slang for any cough syrup.

Social Networking Websites Linked to Teenage Substance Abuse

Columbia University’s Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse (CASA) recently published a study that showed a positive correlation between drug use and the heavy use of social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter.

In their study, 70% of children aged 12 to 17 who reported to have participated in some type of risky behavior such as using alcohol and/or drugs, also reported using social networking websites such as Facebook and MySpace on a regular basis. Furthermore, according to CASA, teens who reported using social media were five times likelier to use tobacco, three times likelier to drink alcohol and twice as likely to try marijuana.

What is a Baker Act?

A Baker Act is a means of providing individuals with emergency services and temporary detention for mental health evaluation and treatment when required, either on a voluntary or an involuntary basis.

How are voluntary and involuntary Baker Act Admissions different?

A voluntary Baker Act is when a person 18 years of age or older, or a parent or guardian of a person age 17 or under, makes application for admission to a facility for observation, diagnosis or treatment.

An involuntary Baker Act is when a person is taken to a receiving facility for involuntary examination when there is reason to believe that he or she is mentally ill and because of his or her mental illness, the person has refused voluntary examination; the person is unable to determine for himself or herself whether examination is necessary and without care or treatment, the person is likely to suffer from neglect or refuse to care for himself or herself and such refusal could pose a threat of harm to his or her well being; and there is a substantial likelihood that without care or treatment, the person will cause serious bodily harm to himself, herself or others in the near future as evidenced by recent behavior.

Are there other criteria to know if a Baker Act is appropriate?

Yes, there is an additional criterion for a voluntary and involuntary Baker Act not included here. For example, a law enforcement officer may transport an individual to a facility for evaluation if there is reason to believe that the individual's behavior meets statutory guidelines for involuntary examination.

What is an ExParte Petition for Involuntary Examination?

If you are willing to swear in a Petition for Involuntary Examination that you have personally witnessed an individual causing harm to themselves or others, an "ExParte" for an Involuntary Examination can be completed at the Clerk's Office, Mental Health Division.

What is the procedure for filing the Petition and Affidavit Seeking ExParte Order Requiring Involuntary Examination?

A family member or interested person may fill out the petition and affidavit in the Clerk's Office. You will need to provide proper identification and have personally witnessed the individual's actions.

What happens after I file the Petition and Affidavit?

Your sworn affidavit will be reviewed by the court. If the court believes, based on the evidence provided in the petition and affidavit, the judge will enter an order for the sheriff to pick up and transport the person to the nearest receiving facility.

When will the order be served on the person?

The sheriff will make every attempt to take the person into custody and transport the person to a facility. If the person cannot be located by the sheriff, the sheriff will hold the order for seven (7) days and continue attempts to take the person into custody.

How long will the order hold the person in a facility?

A person may not be detained for more than 72 hours.

Underage Drinking Ordinance Curtailed in Kinnelon, New Jersey

While many New Jersey municipalities have adopted tough laws on underage drinking in hopes of curtailing it, officials in Kinnelon, New Jersey have decided to foster a different approach.

Despite disapproval from many sources including local law enforcement, officials in Kinnelon tabled an underage drinking ordinance, promising to create a committee to come up with an alternative solution. Police Chief John Finkle, who supports the tough ordinance on underage drinking, stated that the current statute did not deter juveniles from drinking on private property while the proposed ordinance would certainly have done so.

While many hope the council adopts the ordinance and creates tough consequences on non-law abiding teens, such as license suspension and considerable fines, many parents in the community have expressed their disapproval. At a recent school board meeting, school board president Margaret Zybrick told parents and the board she believed underage drinkers should be educated and not punished when they made a mistake, such as drinking.

"Kids are bound to make mistakes. I think the repercussions of their actions should be done in a way that they learn from their mistakes and are not brow beaten from them," said Zybrick.

And while the community is divided on adopting the ordinance, it remains to be seen whether the curtailment of the ordinance and the adoption of other effective alternatives produces better results in the community.

Recovery High School to Open in Southeastern Massachusetts

With a large number of its adolescentpopulation using opiates, and with addiction levels reaching epidemicproportions, The State Department of Public Health granted funds to establish “RecoveryHigh School”, located in Brockton Massachusetts.

The school which is expected toopen its doors in December, will be funded with $500’000 per year and willenroll as many as 50 high school diploma-seeking students ranging from 14 to 21years of age. The staff will consist of a principal, four teachers and twocounselors.

Founder of the support group “ParentsSupporting Parents for the families of opiate-addicted children” Lisa Murphy,believes the amount of pressure teens experienceto obtain to get top grades, scholarships and keep up with friends can be drawthem to opiates. Her own daughter, became addicted toheroin at the age of 19 and has spent 5 years in recovery.

Dr. Bernard Biermann of the University of Michigan's C.S. Mott Children's Hospital believes that parents should never assume their teens are not enticed by illegal drugs and substances, and that it is crucial that they remain vigilant and openly communicate with their children about even the most sensitive topics. While “bath salts” seem to be the new drug of choice in Mansfield Ohio, Lieutenant Ken Coontz doesn't want the public to think bath salts are the only drugs families should be concerned about. "Although it is a terrible drug, we still have other problems," Coontz said. "Our two primary problems are still heroin and prescription medication abuse."

Sherry Branham, who serves as a director of program management and public relations for the mental health board in Mansfield, has long been emphasizing the importance of community awareness and educational programs and forums. Many of the forums have hosted panelists from diverse backgrounds, offering a variety of expertise. Some of the panelists have included counselors, social service representatives and city police crime lab directors.

As education and prevention is the first step in addressing teen addiction, Branham hopes the residents of Mansfield continue to attend community forums in high numbers in order to get a better understanding the various drug issues that surround them and threaten their community.

Our focus is on assisting in the continuing education of the adolescents that enter our facility and to ensure that: those students who have fallen behind academically progress through completion of their work assignments from their school of origin; those students pursuing a GED work through an established GED program in preparation for the GED exam; and those students who are academically on point or excelling academically, remain so.

We oversee the completion of school assignments with each teenager and provide time in the daily schedule for studies. Individual Tutoring is available.

Our state of the art computer lab allows student’s access to “Florida Virtual” and other online distance learning programs for grade forgiveness and credit acceleration. The Department of Education requires all dependent adolescents receive educational opportunity. Celebrating National Recovery Month

To Celebrate September's National Recovery Month, Inspirations Teen Rehab exhibited at the 5th Annual “Harvesting The Voices of Recovery; An Autumn Family Festival” on September 17, 2011 in Palm Beach County.

National Recovery Month is an Annual Event sponsored by SAMHSA (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration) to promote the societal benefits of treatment for substance use and mental disorders and to celebrate people in recovery. It also lauds the contributions of treatment providers, and promotes the message that recovery in all its forms is possible. Recovery Month spreads the positive message that behavioral health is essential to overall health, that prevention works, treatment is effective and people can and do recover.

Helping spread the message of recovery, Inspirations Teen Addiction Treatment resource exhibit booth was available to the community throughout the event. Clinical Director, Dr. Hughes represented Inspirations reporting that approximately over 700 people from the tri-county area attended the Festival.

Hosted by SAMH Consumer Advisory Council in Palm Beach County the event featured “Sarge,” a well-known recovering comedian, exhibitor booths of recovery resources, music, “Recovery’s Got Talent” competition, a Chili cook-off, a Cookie Bake-off, children’s activities and fun for all ages.

Bath Salts Still Legal Despite Lethal Effects

With a growing number of individuals resorting to “bath salts” to become dangerously high, researchers and legislators are rushing to inform the public on its devastating side effects.

Bath salts are manmade substances made from mephedrone and methylenedioxypyrovalerone (MPDV); dangerous synthetic chemicals that cause hallucinations, paranoia and aggressive behavior upon their usage, whether they are snorted, smoked or injected.

Many hospitals have reported a high number of patients being admitted due to bath salt-related injuries and doctors warn that because the drug is widely available and affordable, they expect to the see the number of bath salt causalities significantly increase within the next few years.

And while it may take time for this potentially lethal drug to be banned by the Drug Enforcement Administration, legislators are fighting hard to place bath salts on the list of “schedule I substances” in order for bath salts to be formally recognized as a hard core, fatal drug that can be detrimental to its users.

According to St. Louis County’s police department located in the state of Missouri, heroin overdose claimed the lives of 49 individuals in the past year.

St. Louis County police Chief Tim Fitch believes the problem has reached epidemic proportions with almost every race and social class succumbing to heroin, the popular and cheap alternative to other illegal substances with widespread availability.

The campaign “Curiosity + Heroin: Not Even Once”, a joint effort of the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse, St. Louis County’s Children's Service Fund and the St. Louis County Police Department have all been working closely together to educate the public on the detrimental side effects of using heroin. Furthermore, they have been identifying and arresting individuals who supply the drug in schools and neighborhoods across the county

How Personal Injury has Become a Social Phenomenon

Commonly recognized as a problem stemmingfrom a psychological disorder, inflicting damage to oneself or in other words“self-injury” seems to have become more of a social trend than psychologicalissue considering the large population of people who use cutting as a form ofexpression and rebellion.

The act of “self-injuring” which emergedin the 90’s in rock and heavy metal bands was recognized as a way of expressingsocial identity and “disaffection from society”, as well as a way to support and identify with other members of such groups.

In today’s society, self-injury has become a popular activity among teens across the nation. Furthermore, with the social stigma attached to “cutting” drasticallydecreasing since the 90’s, more and more teens are succumbing to self-injury.

Cutting is sometimes (but not always) associated with depression, bipolar disorder, eating disorders, obsessive thinking, or compulsive behaviors. It can also be a sign of mental health problems that cause people to have trouble controlling their impulses or to take unnecessary risks. Some people who cut themselves have problems with drug or alcohol abuse.

Cutting can be habit forming. It can become a compulsive behavior — meaning that the more a person does it, the more he or she feels the need to do it. The brain starts to connect the false sense of relief from bad feelings to the act of cutting, and it craves this relief the next time tension builds. When cutting becomes a compulsive behavior, it can seem impossible to stop. So cutting can seem almost like an addiction, where the urge to cut can seem too hard to resist. A behavior that starts as an attempt to feel more in control can end up controlling you.

A recent study published by Columbia University's National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse reported that teens who regularly accessed social profiling networks such as Facebook and Myspace were twice as likely to succumb to recreational drugs, twice as likely to consume alcohol and to smoke marijuana, and five times likelier to use tobacco after having being exposed to it via pictures, comments and blogs on popular social networking websites.

Furthermore, the study revealed that 40% of the teenagers had seen images or read blogs on other teens getting drunk or using tobacco, and roughly 70% of them reported logging on to a social networking websites on a daily basis.

Joseph Califano, former U.S Secretary of Health, Education and Welfare, also founder of Columbia University’s National center on Addiction and Substance Abuse (CASA), strongly believes that "The relationship of social networking site images of kids drunk, passed out, or using drugs and of suggestive teen programming to increased teen risk of substance abuse offers grotesque confirmation of the adage that a picture is worth a thousand words."

Califano also believes that it is time for website administrators and all others whom benefit from these websites take responsibility and “deploy their technological expertise to curb such images and to deny use of their sites to children and teens who post pictures of themselves and their friends drunk, passed out or using drugs".

While prescription opiates are effective and crucial to patients with debilitating aches and pains, in recent years they have become a popular recreational drug among teens. Available at only a fraction of the cost of other popular mainstream drugs like heroin, prescription drugs are easy to find and relatively inexpensive.

In the U.S, prescription opiates are the second most abused drug after marijuana and in recent years the number of its victims, a large number being adolescents, has virtually multiplied.

7 Tips on How to Discuss a Child's Drug Addiction with Your Other Children

Confusion, uncertainty and insecurity abounds for children who don’t understand why their brother or sister is sleeping all day, acting crazy, looking funny and no longer participate with the family.

Being honest and open to your child/children about their sibling’s substance abuse issues is respectful and fair. Don’t forget that children are very intuitive and if they see their parents speaking in hushed tones when it comes to their sibling or witness an emotional and/or physical change they will realize something is up.

Here are seven tips for parents on how to begin a conversation about substance abuse in the family:

1.) Pick an easy, comfortable time to chat with your kids. Maybe a picnic in the park or a meal at their favorite
restaurant is a good backdrop.

2.) Though it is a big deal, don’t make it so in the conversation. Parents should be able to tell the truth in a way that children are able to understand and prepare themselves for the changes that will happen in the family. For many kids, routine helps them feel safe. So if life becomes unpredictable, they will need help adjusting to the changes.

3.) Ask the kids if they are worried or concerned about what’s going on within the family. If they don’t come forth, leave it. Simply say that if they are confused, scared or upset about anything that they see or hear you are there for them anytime.
4.) If there have been volatile arguments within the family let the children know that they have nothing to do with the fighting and that you are sorry that they had to witness these outbreaks.

5.) The children should be told that regardless of what’s happening with their sibling that he/she loves them and again, they are not responsible.

6.) If the children are aware that there is something wrong with their brother or sister, it is open, honest and healthy to tell them that he/she is sick at the moment and that Mom and Dad are doing everything they can to help him/her get well.

How to test your teen for drugs?

There are several accurate, FDA-cleared testing methods available that use urine, hair, oral fluids, and sweat (patch). These methods vary in cost, drugs detected, and detection period. Parents and schools can determine their needs and choose the method that best suits their requirements, as long as the testing kits are from a reliable source.

Whether you are trying to prevent drug use, discover possible drug use, stop current use, or just be reassured that a teen is on the right road, home testing will help.

Let your teens know that you love them very much to let them be involved with drugs and that you will use any tool available to keep them away from drugs, including using random drug testing in your home.

Are schools doing drug testing?

Currently, random drug testing can only be conducted among students who participate in competitive extracurricular activities. Reasonable suspicion/cause testing involves a school requiring a student to provide a urine specimen when there is sufficient evidence to suggest that the student may have used an illicit substance. Typically, this involves the direct observations made by school officials that a student has used or possesses illicit substances, exhibits physical symptoms of being under the influence, and has patterns of abnormal or erratic behavior.

Which drugs can be tested for?

Various testing methods normally test for a "panel" of drugs. Typically, a drug panel tests for marijuana, cocaine, opioids, amphetamines, and PCP. If a parent or school has a particular problem with other drugs, such as MDMA, GHB, or steroids, they can include testing for these drugs as well.

Needless Death - 14 year old teen dies after binge-drinking at slumber party

A 14 year girl lost her life after she and a few friends consumed numerous drinks which contained soda and vodka. Takeimi Rao of Santa Rosa, California was hosting a sleepover where she and her friends mixed vodka with soda and binge drank to the point of vomiting, all while an adult was present in the house.

Lieutenant Dennis O'Leary of Sonoma County believed Rao had taken a bottle of vodka from the kitchen cabinet and likely poured it into an empty plastic water bottle.

The unsuspecting mother of the victim, who was awakened several times during the night due to the sound of vomiting, was told by the girls that their illness was due to food poisoning. She was seemingly unaware of the presence of alcohol until she was unable to wake up her own daughter the next day.

The message is clear: Do not underestimate your children.

Incidents like this can be entirely avoided if parents monitor their teens. Parents should encourage open communication with their children in order to keep track of their child’s friends, habits and predispositions.

Binge-drinking and underage drinking in America

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, North Dakota was pronounced the state with the highest percentage of binge drinking nationwide.

The study also included that binge drinking or consuming five or more drinks on one occasion, was prevalent amongst 29.8% of North Dakotan residents.

The same study found that amongst all Americans between the ages of 12 to17 nationwide, the binge-drinking rate was about 8.8%.

Furthermore, Vermont seemed to have had the highest reported underage drinking within the past month with about 36.6% of its residents ranging from 12-20 years of age consuming alcohol.

Utah seemed to set an example for the rest of the nation by locking in the lowest rates of binge-drinking and underage drinking, which were 14.1% and 14.2%, respectively.

At first glance, the question may be fairly easy to answer, especially if you have children, but the underlying truth of the matter is that in this day and age, more and more kids are becoming victims of drug abuse and they are not receiving the help they should be receiving.

In a study aimed at high school students, 60% were reportedly aware of drug use at their schools and 10% of children between 12 and 17 years of age are current substance abusers.

Parents can be the number one help in their children's lives when it comes to drug abuse, simply because they have the means to prevent it. Prevention is believed by experts to be far more effective than any other way to protect kids from drug abuse.

Juvenile Court Judge Demchick-Alloy stresses accountability

It's every parent's nightmare to see their child standing before a judge, but when the judge is juvenile court judge Wendy Demchick-Alloy, tough love may be what is needed.

Judge Demchick-Alloy's attention to police and psychologists’ reports helps her to pass justice for the many young boys and girls that engage in unlawful acts. With tough but fair reactions, the juvenile detainees both respect the judge and fear her. Recently, a 17 year old girl was brought back into court after being caught with marijuana while she was awaiting trial for another drug related charge. Judge Demchick-Alloy felt responsible to not only make sure the young girl understood her mistakes but also was given enough incentive to make her want to change her course of life.

Counts like these seem overwhelming, but for the judge who also spends a lot of time visiting various youth detention centers and programs across the state. Young offenders line up to discuss problems with her, many suffering from various problems such as psychological, substance, alcohol or physical abuse.

Those who have succeeded in straightening out their mistakes stop by to thank her.

"Each kid is an individual,” she says. “It could be any of our kids, How would I want my kids to be treated if they were in here? How would I want the judge to behave? That’s how I do my job. Changing the Dangerous Binge-drinking Patterns in Iowa

Binge drinking, or the excessive use of alcohol, has been linked to many deaths, accidents and severe health problems such as alcohol poisoning and liver disease. Furthermore, within the past decade it has become the main focus of Drug and Alcohol Dependency Services, which is funded by state grants in order to hire trained individuals to monitor alcohol abuse patterns within troubled counties across the nation.

According to The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), about 75 % of the alcohol consumed by adults in the United States is in the form of binge drinks.

Scott Gooding was hired in Lee County, Iowa to help reduce adult and teen binge drinking. His three year position at Alcohol and Drug Dependency Services is funded by a State Prevention Enhancement Grant from Iowa’s Department of Public Health.

Gooding says he’ll be looking at” local ordinances, advertising and social availability of alcohol in the area” in order to change the dangerous binge-drinking patterns amongst the residents of Lee County, which rank 10^th place on the list of Iowa’s top 23 counties with alcohol-related issues.

Parents who Experienced the Destruction of K2 Warning Families of its Dangers

While a statewide ban in on a potentially fatal drug commonly known as “K2” or “fake weed” has been put into place in Georgia to protect vulnerable teens, parents of former K2 users warn other parents about the dangerous side effects of this drug.

Due to its inability to be detected by drug tests, K2 or “fake weed” which consists of an herbal mixture and spice plant products, had long been considered a safe alternative to common weed. Many families were not aware that their teens were using this drug until its dangerous side effects began to surface.

The Rice family of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania took their 13 year old son Ray to the hospital after having shown heart attack symptoms. He was rushed to the emergency room and was later diagnosed with burns on his two collapsed lungs. The cause of his sudden illness was mysterious until his father found K2 in his room.

Ray remains sedated in the ICU where his family can only hope he recovers from the effects of the drug that has put him and his family through such distress.

Teen drug abuse is rampant say cops and counselors in Pleasanton, CA

With half of its student body confessing to smoking marijuana, the school administrators and parents of Hart Middle School, located in Pleasanton, California were shocked after a recent PTA meeting which discussed the dangerous trends amongst the schools’ students.

After interviewing the students of Hart middle school, counselor Tammy Schoonover estimated that 25% of the students drank alcohol and 50% smoked marijuana.

Officer Ryan Tujague, a member of the police department's special enforcement unit warned parents that even the brightest of students were succumbing to marijuana, OxyContin, heroin and other substances, often fooling their unsuspecting parents who could never imagine their daughter/son was purchasing and using illegal drugs to achieve dangerous highs.

Tujague also pointed out the growing crime rate correlated with the growing number of addicts, so often young teens, who are committing the pettiest of crimes in order to be able to purchase drugs and feed their addiction.

An increase in the use of party drugs is beginning to worry authorities.

OPPOSITIONAL DEFIANT DISORDER (ODD) & Conduct Disorder - Diagnostic Features

Teen Behavior Problems are obvious when a teen demonstrates a pattern of negative, defiant and disobedient behavior, also known as Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD). Teens will also demonstrate repeated and persistent refusal to adhere to rules and respect the rights of others, without concern or empathy, also known as Conduct Disorder.

Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD)

The DSMIV (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders) identifies Oppositional Defiant Disorder as “a recurrent pattern of negative, defiant, disobedient, and hostile behavior toward authority figures that persists for at least 6 months and is characterized by frequent occurrence of at least four of the following behaviors: losing temper, arguing with adults, defying or refusing to comply with the requests or rules of adults, deliberately doing things that will annoy other people, blaming others for his or her own mistakes or misbehavior, being sensitive or easily annoyed by others, being angry and resentful, or being spiteful or vindictive.

Negativistic and defiant behaviors are expressed by persistent stubbornness, resistance to directions, and unwillingness to compromise, give in, or negotiate with adults or peers. Defiance may also include deliberate or persistent testing of limits usually by ignoring orders, arguing, and failing to accept blame for misdeeds. Hostility can be directed at adults or peers and is shown by deliberately annoying others or by verbal aggression. ”

Conduct Disorder

The DSMIV (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders) identifies Conduct Disorder as “a repetitive and persistent pattern of behavior in which the basic rights of others or major age-appropriate societal norms or rules are violated. There are four main groupings of these behaviors: aggressive conduct that causes or threatens physical harm to other people or animals, non aggressive conduct that causes property loss or damage, deceitfulness or theft; and serious violations of rules.”

Children who are diagnosed with Conduct Disorder are typically aggressive, initiating aggressive behaviors or reacting aggressively. Physical fighting, bullying, threatening, or intimidating is demonstrated. “Physical violence may also take the form of rape, assault, or homicide.”

What happened to my child? This is the question most often asked, when parents call Inspirations Teen Rehab seeking help for their teenage child. When parents call our center for help, their conversations quickly recount a time when their teenager was once a small child, and their world was happy, their child was obedient, warm, welcoming, and loving. Then, the conversation turns to the current situation of the struggle between the parent and the child, in which the parent is traumatized, baffled, and in a state of complete despair and desperation, needing the assistance of anyone, preferably a professional, to help understand and mend the alarming and chaotic behaviors of the teenager and the repair of the destruction of the family unit. Most parents are either heartbroken or angry or both. Their dream for their child, which began when their child was placed in their arms upon birth, now appears shattered.

Many parents are fearful of their teenager’s future, as teen behaviors often jeopardize their college opportunities and many times, put them at risk for incarceration. Seven Ways Parents Can Reduce Troubled Teen Behaviors and at Risk Potential

It is prudent for all parents to recognized risk factors for teens, focusing on “troubled teens”, as the most at risk group of high school teenagers. Teens are a population of people, most at risk for drug use, abuse, and addiction. For troubled teens, the risk that teens will smoke, drink, get drunk and use illegal drugs increases sharply if they are highly stressed, frequently bored or have substantial amounts of spending money.

Below are seven ways parents/guardians can reduce troubled teen behaviors and at risk potential

• Identify mental health issues including attention deficit disorder, depression, oppositional defiance disorder, bipolar, PTSD, and other conditions commonly found in the teenage population.

• Understand when and why your children are bored, upset or triggered to engage in negative behaviors. Engage them in activities, suited for their personality and ability.

• Limit the amount of money your children have to spend and monitor how that money is spent.

• Know who your children's friends are and keep their friend’s and parent’s telephone numbers available for your use.

• Create a rewards-based chore and responsibility schedule. Reward good behavior and goal-oriented chores, tasks, and academics.

• Participate in your children's lives: attend their sports events, musical or theatrical accomplishments, oversee their homework and remain knowledgeable about their grades and academic performance, participate in activities together, and talk with them about drugs.
• Identify the stress in your child's life and help them, offering individual therapy or boarding school, adolescent residential rehab, and alternative solutions.

Prescription Drugs - Juveniles in Trouble with the Law

If your son or daughter were to give another child prescription drugs that they might find at home and the child overdose and die, it is highly likely that a civil suit against you for negligence will result in your having to pay damages.

There is also a chance that you could face criminal prosecution for your leaving dangerous drugs around that could lead to the death of another.

Possession of controlled substances with intent to sell is a crime. The painkillers are mostly Schedule II drugs. Ritalin and Adderall are Schedule II drugs. Most benzodiazepines are Schedule IV drugs.

According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s report “Crime in the United States”, there were 143,639 juveniles arrested by state and local law enforcement agencies for drug abuse violations during 2006, representing 10.4% of the drug arrests in which the offender’s age was reported.

If your child is caught in possession of any amount of painkillers or stimulants here are the federal guidelines:

First Offense: Not more than 20 years. If death or serious injury, not less than 20 years, or more than life. Fine $1 million.

Second Offense: Not more than 30 years. If death or serious injury, not less than life. Fine $2 million.

If your child is caught with benzodiazepines, here are the federal guidelines:

First Offense: Not more than 3 years. Fine not more than $250,000.
Second Offense: Not more than6 years. Fine not more than $500,000.

Obviously, if your child is treated as a minor the guidelines can be different, but it is still drug trafficking. By leaving prescription drugs around and by not educating our kids about the dangers of prescription drugs, they risk not only serious injury or death but also prison.

Most Abused Prescription Drugs Abuse by Teens

Painkillers (OxyContin and its generic form oxycodone, Lortab, Vicodin, Percodan, Percocet and the Fentanyl Patch) are the most common pharmaceuticals abused by teens, especially by younger teens. Stimulants (Ritalin, Adderall) abuse is more common among older teens and college students than younger teens. Benzodiazepines (Xanax, Valium, Klonopin) are abused by teens of all ages.

Oxies, OC, hillbilly heroin, oxycotton, 80s, percs, vikes, and vikings are commonly used terms to refer to painkillers. Ritz, rippers, dexies, and bennies are commonly used terms to refer to stimulants. Benzos, xanies, xani-bars, xani-bombs, and roofies are commonly used terms to refer to benzodiazepines.

Everyone understands that heroin is a dangerous drug and many people die from heroin overdoses. What parent would not be horrified if their children took heroin? However, if your children are taking these narcotic painkillers, they are taking drugs that mimic the effects of heroin in the body.

Everyone also understands that cocaine is a dangerous drug. What parent wants their children to use cocaine? However, many parents watch their children take Ritalin and Adderall, two heavy stimulants that are Schedule II drugs-just like cocaine. In 2006, it is estimated that three out of 10 high school seniors abuse prescription stimulants.

Stimulant side effects include dilated pupils, increased heart and respiratory rates, elevated blood pressure, feelings of restlessness, anxiety, and delusions, hostility and aggression, and panic, suicidal, or homicidal tendencies. Overdose or death is preceded by high fever, convulsions, and heart failure which may be hastened by physical activity.

Benzodiazepines can cause dilated pupils and slurred speech, feelings of intoxication, loss of motor coordination, respiratory depression, sensory alteration, depression and lowered blood pressure. In younger children these side effects are multiplied and can lead to seizures and, if not immediately addressed, death.

Since antidepressants (Paxil, Prozac, Effexor, Lexapro) are prescribed now for everything from weight loss to muscle pain, they are in many medicine cabinets and are left lying on bedside tables. As we discussed last week, there is now evidence that these drugs are no more effective than a placebo (sugar pill) and that they are linked to 52% of the suicides by women in Sweden in2006. The FDA has ordered suicide and violence warnings placed on the antidepressant boxes if these dangerous drugs are taken by teenagers because these violent side effects are even more prevalent in younger people.

The danger to teens from all of these prescription drugs is greatly increased when they are combined with each other or with alcohol.

No caring parent would leave heroin, cocaine or other dangerous street drugs on their nightstand or in the medicine cabinet or just dump it in the garbage. However, many parents do exactly this with legal heroin, legal cocaine: antidepressants and benzodiazepines.

You may not know what pharming is, but your teenagers do. Your first step in helping protect your teens is to speak the same language. Knowing the vocabulary surrounding prescription drug abuse can help you take a proactive approach in communicating with your teen and safeguarding their health and safety.

Teenagers turn to prescription drugs because they perceive them as less dangerous than illegal drugs. Because of this, teenage prescription drug abuse is on the rise.

In conversations with your teen about drugs, be sure to include prescription drug abuse and why it's harmful. Tell them that taking prescription or over-the-counter (OTC) drugs without a doctor's approval and supervision can be a dangerous—even deadly—decision. Dispel the myth that these drugs are less harmful than street drugs because they are available through a doctor or at the local drug store.

The Language of Prescription Drug Abuse

"Pharming" (pronounced "farming")
From the word pharmaceutical. It means kids getting high by raiding their parents' medicine cabinets for prescription drugs to get high.

Parties where teens bring prescription drugs from home, mix them together into a big bowl (see 'trail mix'), and grab a handful. Not surprisingly, pharm parties are usually arranged while parents are out.

"Bowling parties"
Like "pharming" - mixing medications and taking them randomly.

Sharing and taking these substances on the way to school.
